The official Plascon Colour Of The Year for 2017 is aptly called “in the mood” (06-E2-3).

Taken from the ‘terrain’ colour story, this easy-to-use, earthy colour is anything but basic. It’s the perfect background for any space and pairs beautifully with other colours. The Colour Of The Year is a neutral like no other. It’s beautifully complex in appearance and effortlessly calming in its nature.

Last week, we featured “Element,” the first instalment of Plascon’s 2016 Colour Forecast. “Discovery” is the second theme, drawing inspiration from space and futuristic design.

Influenced by the night sky, space and galaxies, Discovery uses cool colours with bright accents reminiscent of the milky way. Paint techniques such as ombre and strong stripes of colour are used to give an impression of planet surfaces.

Plascon has unveiled their official shade for 2016, Atlantic Beach (B5-B1-1).

Tying in with the upcoming 2016 Olympic games set to take place in Brazil, Plascon has brought this vibrant blue (also seen in the Brazilian flag) to the foreground.

This deep colour promotes concentration and works exceptionally well in an office or workspace. Add bright colours such as yellow or green for stand-out accents.

No longer a centre of pure functionality, the kitchen has become the ultimate personal lifestyle statement.

Look 1: Boldly Go

Known as the colour that stimulates the appetite, deep red from Plascon’s Eco-sustenance palette livens up an all white hearth.

The key to achieving the eco-sustenance decor effect is to combine the nature-inspired colours of the palette with materials such as linen, wood, and wicker. Both red and brown fall within the warm hemisphere of the colour wheel and lend themselves to a more rustic aesthetic. For visual interest, add a little punch of complementary colour, such as that lent by pots of lush green herbs.

Look 2: Industrial Chic

Usher in urban cool with Plascon’s Future fusion palette to give this kitchen a sophisticated yet subtle character.

Uncluttered, clean and contemporary, this kitchen is as much for cooking as it is for entertaining. Think factory floor meets high-tech home – the look is industrial with cement, steel, and glass finishes. Here, the stainless steel counter teamed with eclectic collections of glass and silverware doubles up as an elegant bar. Choose furniture pieces with simple lines in monochromatic tones to complement this palette of cool greys, shiny silver and stone.

An interior designer, Jeanne Stravino worked at Onepointzero and La Grange Interiors (founded by her aunt Charlotte Daneel), before launching her own company, Room 31.

For her three-year-old son Sebastian Matteo’s room, she opted for a practical yet playful look that wouldn’t date too quickly, that includes a feature wall in Plascon’s Nautilous B6-D1-1.

The undisputed pièce de resistance, the three-quarter bunk bed, was “designed to maximise on space, plus it’s great for sleepovers,” she says. “Besides all the storage space, there is also a little secret compartment that he uses as his ‘lift’ to go to his ‘coffee shop’ from where he sells me cappuccinos!”

Even if our homes and careers are constant works-in-progress, there is always that one place that keeps us reaching for even greater heights. This Johannesburg creative shares with us a space that inspires her.

Naledi King left Swaziland at 19 to attend Bible school, ran a hair-braiding company in Joburg (of which Marianne Fassler was a fan), embarked on a musical career in 2010, and then trained to become a life coach and cofounded a personal development company, Eneegma. The lounge of her Kensington home is centred around a Yamaha baby grand piano that was given to her by her husband instead of an engagement ring. “While I was not doing music, seeing the piano would be a reminder that my musical dream was still going to happen,” says Naledi. The wall behind is Daring Lime G1-A1-1 by Plascon.

Bridging the divide between work and living space, these four divergent open-plan offices give dull grey cubicles a run for their money.

GARDEN VARIETY
Bring the outdoors in by combining natural and contemporary elements to chic effect in this tranquil botanical den.

GET THIS LOOK:

  • Paint the front wall with Plascon Double Velvet Cape Cliffs (G7-E1-1). Add a natural, yet modern twist by covering the back wall with a sheet of plywood.
  • Throw traditional wall art positioning notions out the window by layering two-dimensional images to create a wallpaper effect and mixing in more three-dimensional, framed images on top.
  • Fill empty glass jars with interesting images instead of plants. When choosing natural elements, go for cleaner, more contemporary materials such as plywood. By using wood with a cleaner, more modern finish, you’ll get a look that’s natural, yet graphic and modern.
  • Collect old boxes and crates to stack against the wall for an eye-catching sculptural arrangement that doubles as a storage solution.

Accessories:
Plywood sheet wall covering, Baltic Timber. Wall-mounted pot-plant holder, Thingking. Succulent, Stark Ayres. Selection of storage boxes, Coco Karoo, Continuum, Mid-Century Modern and The Treasury. Hanging succulent, Opus. Pressed plant (framed), Coco Karoo. Botanical print (framed), L’Orangerie. Botanical print (canvas), Block & Chisel. Diesel with Foscarini Duii lamp, Créma Design. Green Wonki Ware jug, Blink. Glass jar (with print inside), o.live. Vintage green glass vase, Prêt-à-Pot. Wooden chest of drawers, Artefect. Succulents in drawers, Stark Ayres. Glass dome, Obelisk. INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION
Industrial doesn’t have to mean drab – bright colours and fun décor elements bring a fresh new look to this nine-to-five haven.

GET THIS LOOK:

  • Paint the back wall with Plascon Double Velvet Gold Finch (Y4-B1-2), while keeping the front wall white to offset the rest of the palette.
  • Draw barcode lines on the wall with a laser or spirit level, mask the lines with masking tape, then paint them using Plascon blackboard paint.
  • Create three horizontal rectangular blocks below the barcodes with a spirit level and masking tape, then carefully fill in the blocks with Plascon Cloud Terrace (P6-B1-1), Go Go Red (R4-A1-1), Sunset in the Desert (O3-B1-1) and Gold Finch (Y4-B1-2).
  • Photocopy barcode numbers to size and cut the numbers out with a craft knife, creating a stencil. Attach the photocopies to the wall on top of the different-coloured rectangles and paint over the stencil with a sponge roller using Plascon blackboard paint.
  • Finally, paint the repurposed door-turned-tabletop in Plascon Velvaglo Cloud Terrace (P6-B1-1).

Accessories:
Fire extinguisher box, Vamp. Bicycle, Woodheads. Skeletor sway bench, JesseJames Design. Trestles, LIM. Doorframe used as tabletop, Baltic Timber. Mezzadro stool, Mid-Century Modern. Urban Steed cruiser skateboard, JesseJames Design. Clock, Mid-Century Modern. Humanscale Horizon LED task light, Créma Design. Robot pencil holder, Abode. Stationery (wrapping paper, pencils, eraser, sharpener, notebooks), The Deckle Edge. Red “Keep Calm & Carry On” tin, Quirky Me. Black cabinet on wheels, @home. Dolly chair, Kartell.

PATTERN PERFECT
A trendy geometric wall design and eye-catching chandelier give this fashion-forward workspace the edge.

GET THIS LOOK:

  • Liven up the front wall with a geometric Moroccan pattern in Plascon Double Velvet Rafter (P6-E1-1), Nautilous (B6-D1-1), Stony Field (R6-E2-1) and Ivory White (Y4-B2-3). Draw straight horizontal lines with a laser or spirit level, add vertical lines at 45-degree angles, then fill in the shapes with the different colours. Wait for one colour block to dry before painting the adjacent block, using masking tape on the dry areas to create perfect sharp edges.
  • Paint the back wall in Plascon Double Velvet Rafter (P6-E1-1). The warmer tone in the background will offset and highlight the pattern in the foreground while differentiating the two spaces.
  • Paint the repurposed hollow door-turned-tabletop with Plascon Velvaglo Rafter (P6-E1-1).
  • Offset the busy wall pattern with clean-lined accessories.

Accessories:
Grey chandelier, Weylandts. Bed, Tafelberg Furnishers. Linen pillowcase, Aldona Pure Linen. Scatter cushion, The Fabric House. Linen throw, Aldona Pure Linen. Linen sheet, Artefect. Silk carpet, Fibre Designs. Clothing rail, Weylandts. Black hangers, Swift Dry Cleaners. Clothing on rail: Aldona Pure Linen and Isabel de Villiers Clothing. Trestles, LIM. Model wears: aubergine jeans, Ronald Sassoon; watercolour print tank, Jo Borkett; ring, Imagenius; Daniella Michelle boots, Queue Shoes; model holds Aldona Pure Linen dress.

CRAFT CORNER
Shrugging off their former girly image, pastels get a new lease on life in this crafty home studio.

GET THIS LOOK:

  • Paint the back wall with Plascon Double Velvet Fat Alley Cat (B7-E1-2) and the bar stool with Plascon Velvaglo Mystic Copper (O3-C1-1). The front wall gets a coat of You’re My Sweetie (O4-C2-2).
  • Cut hardboard into interesting shapes and paint in You’re My Sweetie (O4-C2-2), Fat Alley Cat (B7-E1-2), Mystic Copper (O3-C1-1) and Happy Ending (Y5-B2-3). Stand them upright along the floating shelves for an offbeat alternative to traditional wall decorations.
  • By layering and combining elements within a contained space – like these floating shelves – you can achieve an interesting visual effect without making the space look too cluttered.
  • Upcycling has never been more on trend. Give new life to antique furniture – like this deconstructed armchair – by reupholstering it.

Accessories:
Gert Hulme paintings, Coco Karoo. Armchair, Artefect. Silk carpet, Fibre Designs. Scaffolding planks used as shelving, Ross Demolition. Belinda Ormond black ceramic vase, Blink. Printed jar, o.live. The perfect spot to enjoy sunny alfresco lunches and balmy soirees, one city patio is given four unique makeovers courtesy of a refreshing selection of complementary hues from Plascon.

MELON PUNCH
Cheery, multi-coloured DIY planters against an intense, hot-pink backdrop transform an ordinary patio into a happy-go-lucky haven.

GET THIS LOOK:

  • Paint the walls with Plascon Wall & All Fuchsia Fizz (R2-A1-1), the table with Plascon Velvaglo Fuchsia Fizz (R2-A1-1) and the chair with Plascon Velvaglo Orange Juice (O3-A1-2). Leave the ceiling and moulding white.
  • Use pops of bright colour to create a colour-blocked effect. The white wall moulding provides a bit of a breather.
  • Repurpose plastic cleaning containers into flowerpots. Remove the labels, punch holes in the sides and hang them against the wall with a colourful selection of string. Remember to make drainage holes in the bottoms.
  • Choose plants such as Sweet William that provide an abundance of colourful flowers and thrive in small containers.
  • The plastic woven carpet adds texture.

Accessories:

Plants, Stodels. Recycled bottles from local recycling depot. String used to hang recycled planters, Southern Ropes. Painted chair, The Treasury. Table, Mr Price. Chair, Chair Crazy. Plastic glasses, bowl, side plates, all Woolworths. Green stool, Mr Price. Orange yoga pouffe, Ashanti. Orange and pink sarongs on chair, Woolworths. Lilo, The Crazy Store. Butterfly net, Khoki, 021 981 5100. Carpet, Moroccan Warehouse, 021 461 8318. Towel (on ledge), @home. Tropical bikini (on ledge), Chica Loca. Orange espadrilles, Ginger Mary at Truworths

LEMON AID
Soft and sherbety pastels, geometric prints and touches of purple come together to create a country-chic retreat in the heart of the city.

GET THIS LOOK:

  • Paint the wall with Plascon Wall & All Lemon Rind (Y4-A1-3) and the table in a lighter tone, such as Plascon Velvaglo Lemony Mist (Y4-A2-3), as a highlight. Paint the pots the same colour as the wall to give the impression that they are receding into the backdrop.
  • Fasten pot plants to the wall with cable ties by attaching them end-to-end until they fit around the pot. String another cable tie through this hoop to act as a loop for hanging, then suspend from the wall with a nail.
  • Bigger pots allow for a bigger choice of plants. Try statice, petunias or pansies.
  • Finish off the look by incorporating a mix of bold, large-scale graphic prints as seen on the cushions and rug.

Accessories:

Painted terracotta pots, Super Floral. Plants, Stodels. Mauve chair, The Modern Home Company. Yellow chair, Haldane Martin. Painted table, Mr Price. Scatter cushions and fabric pot cover, Skinny laMinx. Gardening tools and seed packets, Stodels. Yellow stool, ceramic cup on stool and purple Hunter boots, all Imagenius. Carpet, Gonsenhausers. Fabric on ledge, St Leger & Viney.

BERRY CRUSH
A bold, dramatic backdrop embellished with clean-lined, understated designer accessories make this patio one happening hipster heaven.

GET THIS LOOK:

  • Paint the walls with Plascon Wall & All Hot-n-Spicy (R6-B1-1) and the table with Plascon Velvaglo Fresh Scent (Y6-B2-3). Keep the ceiling and moulding white.
  • Offset the red-and-white palette with a smattering of accessories in light blue or teal.
  • If you opt for a high-design look, choose one item as a showpiece – in this instance it’s the white Haldane Martin planters. Keep the rest of the accessories minimal.
  • Go for green accent plants such as cacti and other succulents.
  • Exposed light bulbs in different shapes strung up on red and blue cords add a trendy, yet minimalist touch.

Accessories:

Eco planter (on wall), Haldane Martin. Chair, The Modern Home Company. Table, Mr Price. Radio, I-fi. Coffee cups, bowls and jug, all Entrepo. White stool, Block and Chisel. Red backpack, Chapel. Trolley, Entrepo. White plant pots and plants, Stodels. Carpets, Fibre Designs. Cushion, Entrepo. Ceramic gemsbok head, Quirky Me. Exposed light bulbs and fittings, Hoi P’loy. Red geometric lampshade, Abode. White bulb and fitting, King Juliet Productions

SPICE INFUSION
A grounded, natural palette accessorised with a miscellany of hanging lanterns and layered textures transforms a sunny terrace into a Moroccan-inspired oasis.

GET THIS LOOK:

  • Paint the wall with Plascon Wall & All You’re My Sweetie (O4-C2-2) and the table with Plascon Velvaglo Freckle (O3-C1-2).
  • Layer the space with a variety of different textured rugs – from smooth plastic to rough natural woven grass – to create a comfortable padded haven.
  • Use a staple gun to cover the ceiling with a pliable, natural woven fabric.
  • For an interesting alternative to the hanging plant trend, put your pot plants into hanging lanterns and stagger them at different heights. Choose plants that will enjoy a terrarium environment.

Accessories:
Lanterns (glass and round), reed lampshades, carpets (except left), chair, leather pouffe, ceramic vase, ceramic bowl, teapot, cushion (on chair), glasses, all Moroccan Warehouse, 021 461 8318. Terracotta pots, Super Floral. Plants, Stodels. Carpets used for ceiling, Ashanti. Carpet on floor (left), Ashanti. Cushion (on floor), Bbellamy & Bbellamy. Oversized basket, Baraka. Hex side table, Haldane Martin. Cactus and basket, both Woodstock Vintage.

According to those in the know, we spend a third of our lives in the bedroom, so why not let this inspire you to make your boudoir as beautiful as possible?

BACK TO BLACK

A little bit of monochromatic magic, along with exotic props and natural accessories add to the allure of this well-travelled bedroom.

GET THIS LOOK:

  • Instead of opting for standard black and white, paint the bottom two-thirds of the walls with the dark grey of Plascon Shark’s Tail (P3-E1-1) and the top third with Plascon Ivory White (Y4-B2-3).
  • Create contrast with white, wood and other natural elements, like the rustic wooden stumps that double as bedside tables; hand-stitched, vintage French linen; and earthy, handmade bedding from natural fibres.
  • Paint the ledge above the bed in the same colour as the back wall and stack with framed artworks in different sizes.
  • Vintage books are repurposed to sculpt a three-dimensional map of Africa and add interest.

Accessories:
Wooden pedestals and sheepskin rug, Nap. Folded paper shape, Poetry. Black and white bowls, Imiso Ceramics. Copper ceramic horses, Haas. Paper light, Weylandts. Antique French linen sheets, textured plain throw and African motif white and navy throw, all Artefect. Vintage French linen pillowcases, Le Brocanteur, 021 761 9142. Cream and black throw, dark grey linen throw and black, hand-printed scarf, all LIM. Art on wall from left: Black Africa, Present Space. Paper Africa by Keri Muller, Abode. Small block-mounted road print and unframed trees, Nap. Painted seascape by Swain Hoogenworst, Haas. Large framed abstract print by Atang Tshikare, Stable. Ceramic plate, Africandy. Small rectangular framed photo, Martin Osner. Wooden Africa, Quirky Me. Circle-design framed print, Nap.

THE BED WORE RED

Warm reds, shades of white and “greyge”, striking art and minimal clutter make for a clean, serene contemporary sanctuary.

GET THIS LOOK:

  • Keep the background neutral by painting the walls “greyge” (not quite beige and not quite grey and very on trend right now) with Plascon Double Velvet Fresh Linen (Y3-E2-3).
  • Steer clear of clutter and opt for a very clean, contemporary look with two or three high-design elements as highlights.
  • Choose accessories that are stripped of detail to let the print above the bed act as a focal point. Opt for original art rather than prints when attempting a high-design look.
  • Instead of investing in a bright red duvet cover, bring in understated red accents with an undersheet and scatter cushions.
  • Ground the look with a felt carpet that also adds texture and an element of masculinity.

Accessories:
Mirror by James Eales, faceted side table by Natalie du Toit and tall black jug, all Stable. Faceted small cement bowl and books, Africandy. White standing lamps, Weylandts. Carpet, Fibre Designs. Art on wall by Vanessa Berlein, Haas. Linen sheets, Aldona. Egyptian cotton pillowcases and duvet cover, both @home.

A new documentary about Cape Town artist Beezy Bailey is premiering this week, so we decided to visit him in his Higgovale home, a creative canvas that never shies away from bold colour combinations.

“I remember the first time I came to this house I had to wear a jacket and be on my best behaviour,” says eccentric fine artist Beezy Bailey of his house, Villa Toscana, which originally belonged to an elderly aunt. “When we first moved in, my wife and I were like the paupers in the palace. Some friends rented rooms here and we had some historically wild parties.”

Set high up in Higgovale, looking down over the lights of Cape Town’s City Bowl, the house was built in the 1950s in the style of a grand old Italian villa. High ceilings, large sash windows and stately marble fireplaces make for an imposing first impression. Today, Beezy shares the house with his wife Nicci and two teenage children. The decor could not be more different.

As an artist, Bailey is known for his boldness; whether as a painter, a maker of monumental sculpture, or creating work in his own Art Factory. He’s also made a foray into sound, working in collaboration with British electronic musician Brian Eno to create paintings with soundtracks, expressing what the visuals and colours would sound like.

At home, Beezy is similarly unafraid to make a noise. “People are terrified of colours,” says the artist. “If it doesn’t work, you can just paint over it.” In Villa Toscana, this ethos finds its expression in a dramatic palette of bold, contrasting colours. “We’ve got this incredible choice of colours and people should spend more time matching them together,” adds Beezy.

Deepend Films will premier the Beezy Bailey documentary, Outsider, on Wednesday 14 May in Cape Town at The Labia and on Monday 19 May in Johannesburg at the Killarney Mall cinema. For more details, please visit: deependfilms.co.za/film/outsider
