A guerrilla mosaic bombing project is bringing art to the streets of Cape Town.

There’s a certain magic to walking through a city and spotting something surprising – a tiny garden, a hidden door, a piece of art peeking around a corner. A new project initiated by House Union Block (HUB), the commercial arm of the Spier Arts Trust, is adding some of this kind of serendipity to the Mother City.

The project will see eight Cape Town-based artists work in collaboration with 15 artisans to create public artworks made from mosaic. These will be installed on the walls of various city locations by the artisans, who’ve all graduated from the Spier Arts Academy’s three-year mosaic-making course. Artists confirmed to take part are Kilmany-Jo Liversage, Robyn Pretorius, Adolf Tafadzwa Tega, Fanie Buys, Olivié Keck, Meshack “Shakes” Tembani, Xolile Mtakatya and Wonder Marthinus. The pieces will be no larger than 50cm x 50cm, and will interpret recurring motifs found in the artists’ work. These cover a range of topics, including identity, social inequality and the environment.

“Public art can be a sort of equaliser, an experience that all of us can access while walking on the street,” explains Mirna Wessels, CEO of the Spier Arts Trust, and HUB. “There is a body of research that shows that in places where there’s public art, there is a greater sense of community; businesses and constituents tend to pull together to make sure that the environment is safe.”

On The Tiles: The Guerrilla Mosaic Bombing Project

The initial phase of the project has been funded by a government grant, as well as by local businesses buying art pieces for their City Bowl premises. For the art to continue to be created and installed, and for an app to be developed that will encourage users to discover the works, the project team are canvassing financial support. “The idea is to sell the artworks to the landlords, or to the tenants with permission from the landlord as well as the City of Cape Town,” Mirna says. “The funds from the sales will then allow us to engage with more artists.”

The first three pieces were unveiled earlier this year, and include two works by Kilmany-Jo Liversage – a mosaic flower and lips. They’re located at the Union House Building, and above a 250-year-old vine at the Cape Heritage Hotel in Bree Street. The third, a mosaic of a bird by artist Robyn Pretorius, is on Shortmarket Street. Happy mosaic hunting!

Mozambican artist Lizette Chirrime, who is known for skilfully combining colour and organic abstract form, has conceptualised a large-scale mosaic entitled Uthomi. It has been installed in a water feature close to Vadas Smokehouse & Bakery at Spier wine farm in the Western Cape.

The artwork, Lizette’s first mosaic, was commissioned by the Spier Arts Trust and produced by the Spier Artisan Studio. “We were keen to work with this talented, thoughtful artist,” says Mirna Wessels, director of the Spier Arts Trust, “not least because her practice — which is often bright, colourful and seemingly playful — is so appropriate for an installation that we hope will engage and intrigue children and adults alike.”

Forming the floor of the fountain, the mosaic has been laid flush with the surrounding surface using a reverse (or indirect) mosaic method. The technique, invented by artist Giandomenico Facchina and used for the installation of the mosaics at the Paris Opera, involves an enlarged mirror image of the original artwork, which is then divided into a number of interlinking sheets.

Rather than the traditional direct method of pasting the mosaic tiles (called tesserae), they’re temporarily pasted face down onto the paper using a special home-made (and water soluble) flour glue. After installation, the paper is removed.

A cement bench has been built in a U-shape around the fountain and visitors are encouraged to engage with the installation and the water. Lizette’s works, some of which are held in collections in South Africa, Spain, Portugal and Italy, often reference water – a link to her upbringing on the coast – and other elements of nature.

Aware of the negative impact humans can have on the environment, Lizette hopes to inspire and evoke positive change through her art. “This strongly echoes Spier’s commitment to sustainability,” says Spier CEO Andrew Milne. “We are keenly aware that water is a precious and increasingly scarce resource and have drastically reduced consumption over the last few years, through a variety of measures. This includes the 100% recycling of grey and black-water through our eco-friendly treatment plant,” he explains.

In addition to viewing Uthomi and the many other sculpture and outdoor installations on the Spier estate, visitors can see artisans at work creating mosaics and beadwork in collaboration with South African fine artists at the satellite Stellenbosch space of the Spier Artisan Studio.

INTERVIEWED BY Mary Garner

Designed by Andrea Spada and Michele Corbani of ILMIO.DESIGN, the Paradiso Ibiza Art Hotel, located in sunny San Antonio Bay in Ibiza, is a retro, art-filled hotel, popping with bright colours, Wes Anderson-esque decor and a seriously luxurious poolside area.

Here, the hotel’s Marketing Manager, Marta Gimeno, shares with VISI the vision behind the mesmerising interiors.

Where did you source the furniture pieces from and who designed them?

Some pieces are bought in, like the outdoor furniture from Spanish brand iSiMAR, while others were designed by us. We also tried to customise all the pieces, making them exclusive to our project. We are industrial designers, so we loved having the opportunity to create most of the pieces ourselves.

How did you settle on a design theme?

The inspiration for the bespoke pieces was born when we started the project. We thought in Archizoom [a renowned Italian architecture firm started in the ’60s] style and from there we started to develop shapes and colours that fit.

What do you keep in mind when sourcing art for the hotel?

We design the rooms and spaces first before selecting art, keeping in mind that art in this hotel has to be colourful, fresh and full of energy.

How did you go about choosing the flooring?

All the floors of the hotel, as well as the bottom of the swimming pool, feature mosaic tiles. We developed custom colours with tile brand Vitrogres. In the rooms, we make use of carpet tiles in three different colour combinations, namely yellow, turquoise and pink. Carpet tiles were the perfect choice in a Miami-style Art Deco concept hotel.

What part do botanicals play in the decor scheme and why did you land on cacti?

The idea of the cacti was born simply by walking around the location. We saw lots of cacti in a chalet close to the hotel and thought it would be perfect. They look great, are inexpensive and are easy to maintain. We use wooden artisanal vases to house them, which contrasts nicely with the rest of the hotel’s shapes, colours and materials.

WORDS Mary Garner

Chicago-based mosaic artist Jim Bachor, who we previously featured here, continues to find creative ways to cover up unsightly potholes in US cities.

His pieces are an attempt to both beautify and draw local government attention to infrastructure upkeep. Recently, he’s taken his stylings to New York in a new series called Vermin of New York. He covered potholes in Brooklyn and Manhattan with mosaics of a pigeon, a dead rat, a cockroach, flowers and a portrait of the US president Donald Trump.

“A lot of my work is pretty upbeat, so I try and be a little unpredictable to keep people off balance — hence the vermin,” Jim told Colossal.

Days after installation, the Donald Trump piece, along with the flowers and cockroach, were removed by the city, something that was never done with the 67 other installations he’s created over the past five years, which you can browse examples of above.

INTERVIEW Tracy Greenwood

We caught up with South African ceramic mosaic artist Jane du Rand, now based in Brisbane, Australia, to talk about her work and the mosaics she created for the facade of the K-RITH tower building in Durban, home to the Africa Health Research Institute.

What prompted your move to Australia?

I never meant to leave South Africa but all of my family had moved, including my parents, and I didn’t want them to grow old in a place where I would not be able to see them.

What is it about ceramic tiles that is special to you?

I love the feeling of the clay in my hands. It offers so much opportunity to experiment with texture, pattern and shape. The surface does not have to be flat; it provides a base on which to build and a surface to carve. The scale of some of the projects you’ve undertaken is mind-boggling.

What is the biggest piece you have produced?

My biggest project in terms of square metres was a building at Melrose Arch in Johannesburg, which I did together with Bronwen Findlay and Andrew Verster. The building part was 400 m2, and I did a further 300 m2 of mosaic on the paving in front.

On both sides of a curved wall enclosing a courtyard are depictions of indigenous plants with healing properties, such as bitter aloe, buchu and wild ginger.

What was your brief from the client for the mosaics you created for the K-RITH Tower Building in Durban?

I did not have a very detailed brief from the clients for this project. I knew it was part of the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine and that research into HIV and TB was done in the building. The client gave me the drawings showing the various sites on the building where artwork was required. They did specify using the double helix on the stairwell wall and asked me to involve disadvantaged youth in making the ceramics. I proposed using different themes in each area, with repetitive shapes and interconnected patterns serving as the common thread. So on one wall we had indigenous plants used in traditional African medicine, on another some cells and viruses enlarged and juxtaposed with plant forms, and on the reception floor healing mandalas. [Jane worked with HIV-positive patients in the creation of the mosaics.]

On both sides of a curved wall enclosing a courtyard are depictions of indigenous plants with healing properties, such as bitter aloe, buchu and wild ginger.

Much of your work has a three dimensional quality to it. What do you want people to take away from seeing your pieces?

I suppose I would like people to be able to recognise the natural world that I most often use as a reference in my work, and to perhaps start to have an appreciation for the native plants and creatures around them.

The K-RITH Tower Building in Durban, designed by FGG Architects, was a finalist in the Corobrik SAIA (South African Institute of Architects) Awards 2017/2018 of Merit and for Excellence.

The newly opened Spier Artisan Studio in Stellenbosch sees artisans using hand-cut mosaics and beads to create interpretations of work by South African artists, many of whom form part of the Creative Block project.

“The opening of this space demonstrates the depth of Spier’s commitment to supporting the visual arts,” says Spier family owner Mariota Enthoven. “We believe the arts are a powerful tool for transformation – sparking new insights and inspiring us to engage with our world in new ways.”

The Stellenbosch studio is an extension of the Spier Artisan Studio in Cape Town. The CBD studio hosts the Spier Artisan Apprenticeship Programme, a rigorous three-year course designed to develop master artisan skills in mosaic and ceramics.

“The space deepens the scope and ultimate effectiveness of what the Apprenticeship Programme offers, giving graduates the invaluable opportunity to gain work experience in a real-life studio and retail environment,” says Mirna Wessels, head of the Spier Arts Trust.

The Spier Artisan Studio in Stellenbosch is open from 10am until 6pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Original Creative Block artworks are on sale in the Studio.

Search #ihavethisthingwithfloors on Instagram and you’ll find hundreds of thousands of snaps from around the world of people standing on magical mosaic tiles. Titled parisianfloors, Sebastian does just that – capturing himself (in a pair of remarkable shoes) standing on intricately detailed floors, covered in colourful designs.

Below, we’ve chosen 21 of our favourites from his account, from floral flooring in Valencia to beautiful patterns spotted in Cuba.

?⚡ Best of 2017 ⚡? Let’s start this Best of series of my favourite floors that I shoot this year. In the beginning of the year I finally managed to go to Les Papilles, a restaurant in the 5th arrondissement near the Pantheon. I had discovered this floor for a long time already but every time I went there it was super crowded and impossible to shoot, bit this year I was lucky and went there just before they would close and then had enough space to take a picture. I still a have a few floors that I really want to shoot but I need to plan it very well in advance due to access restrictions or or busy business hours. #parisianfloors#bestof2017#ihavethisthingwithfloors#ihavethisthingwithtiles#fromwhereistand#paris#selfeet#floor#mosaic#pattern#design#interiordesign#architecture#etro

??Cubanfloors?? We have come to an end of the cuban floors series in collaboration with @gucci. I hope all of you enjoyed this series as much as I did. I think it’s the best floor series I’ve shot so far. I want give a big thank you to @gucci for supporting me on this and helping me realize a long term dream. A even bigger thank you to all the lovely cubans that hosted us on our trip and that welcomed us in their homes and shared their experiences with us. Last but not least to my @lageorgienne ❤ This is one of the floors that stood out most to me. During the whole trip we have encountered numerous floors with similar floral inspired designs or color palettes but this one was definitely different so was the location where we found this. While strolling through the streets of Trinidad we stumbled upon a building with quite a big door and when we took a peek inside the room was filled with pregnant woman waiting for their appointment in their rocking chairs. We ended up at a maternity. I am not sure who was more surprised, us once we realized what we found or them once they saw what we were doing. It was definitely a funny sight and there was a lot of laughter when we explained that we take pictures of floors. If you haven’t seen the whole cuban floors series yet, go check my profile and leave a comment on your favourite floors! Hope you enjoyed it! #cubanfloors#gucci#gucciprincetown#trinidad#cuba#sponsored
