At the Eclectica Design & Art exhibition space on Buitengracht Street, Cape Town, you’ll find collectable furniture, fine art and objets d’art. The furniture pieces were designed for the most part between 1930 and the 1960s. Gallery director Shamiela Tyer answered our questions about shopping for furniture from this era.

What should one look for when buying Mid-century Modern?

It is important to be fully aware of a piece’s provenance and any restoration that has been done. Have a close look at the patina on materials such as wood, leather and brass; you’ll see where the piece has been repaired. It’s not always possible to replace elements with absolute originality, but over-restoration would diminish the value. The best advice, however, is to buy furniture that you would love to see every day.

How does one know whether a piece is authentic?

Check whether the piece has been marked or labelled by its stated creator. There should be a manufacturer label, and a signature or insignia of the designer. If these are unavailable for any reason, track the piece’s ownership history.

How do you incorporate this style into a contemporary home?

Mid-century Modern furniture is timeless. The silhouettes are simple and elegant. The history associated with such a piece will add layers of character to a contemporary room.
