Beautiful furniture may catch your eye, but exceptional furniture creates a feeling. It invites you to sit longer, relax more deeply and enjoy the space around you.

As homes continue to become more personal and multifunctional, comfort is taking centre stage. As living rooms continue to evolve into softer, more relaxed spaces and outdoor areas feel like natural extensions of the interior, furniture is chosen for the experiences it helps create.

The secret to curating an interior is to ask how you want a space to feel. A generous modular sofa encourages connection and conversation; a sculptural swivel chair adds movement and personality; while deep, supportive outdoor seating transforms a patio into a place where lunches linger into late afternoons.

Materials matter too. Tactile fabrics, plush cushioning, AluOak® wood-look finishes and softly rounded forms bring depth and warmth to contemporary spaces. When it comes to outdoor living, performance is equally important. Weather-ready materials, easy-care finishes and dependable construction allow you to create a refined setting without making it difficult to live in.

Mobelli’s collections combine premium comfort with practical, hassle-free living. From adaptable modular lounges to elegant dining settings and inviting outdoor furniture, every piece is selected to help people enjoy their spaces with confidence.

As Mobelli celebrates its 20th anniversary, its philosophy remains refreshingly simple: furniture should look beautiful, feel exceptional and work effortlessly in real life.

Because true comfort cannot be fully appreciated on a screen. You have to sit down, settle in and experience it for yourself. | mobelli.co.za

It started with a wooden sun lounger and a tin of oil. Mobelli founder Alon Sachs had bought what seemed like a reasonable piece of outdoor furniture, only to spend more time maintaining it than enjoying it. “There was nothing relaxing about it,” he recalls. “It felt like I was working for the furniture, instead of the furniture working for me.”

That frustration became a business idea. Together with his brother Aviv, Alon set out to build furniture that was beautiful, durable, and genuinely hassle-free. Outdoor furniture that could handle the elements without demanding anything back.

From Outdoor to the Whole Home

As Mobelli’s outdoor reputation grew, so did the conversation with clients. The same desire for quality without compromise, for furniture that genuinely fits into daily life, extended naturally indoors.

Today, Mobelli’s indoor collections are built around the same philosophy: pieces that are considered, comfortable, and designed to adapt. Modular sofas that reconfigure as a household’s needs change. Deep, generous seating that makes comfort the priority. Flexible arrangements that work for how a home is actually lived in, not just how it photographs.

Beyond the Home

That reputation hasn’t stayed residential. Mobelli works with hotels, boutique lodges, and hospitality spaces across South Africa and beyond – from carefully considered outdoor terraces to fully furnished interiors. It’s a natural extension of the same brief: spaces that need to look exceptional and perform reliably, day after day.

Twenty Years On

Mobelli now has showrooms in Cape Town (Sea Point and Paarden Eiland) and Johannesburg (Illovo Square and Fourways Mall), and a client base that spans residential homes, interior designers, architects, and hospitality operators across Africa.

The collections keep evolving. But the founding idea has stayed exactly the same: furniture should work for the life you want to live.

This year, Mobelli celebrates 20 years of designing spaces where life actually happens – and the Tatu Sofa is one of the clearest expressions of that philosophy yet. Fully modular and endlessly customisable, it’s built around the way you live, not the other way around.

Start with a single seat and build outward, or configure a full lounge suite from scratch. The Tatu grows with your space, your family, and your life – and as winter settles in, it becomes the kind of comfort worth gathering around.

Three cushion styles let you tailor exactly how it feels: the traditional Square for classic, everyday comfort; the Box for a more upright, supported seat; and the Shlomphie for those evenings when relaxing fully is the only agenda. The backrest and armrest are interchangeable, and each seat doubles as an ottoman – so the sofa shifts as your evening does.

Fabric choices are just as personal. Ready-to-order in linen beige, white corduroy, or vegan leather that wears beautifully over time. Or choose your own fabric and colour entirely – because this is your sofa, after all.

The Tatu isn’t just a place to sit. It’s where your people land, linger, and always seem to end up staying longer than planned.

Available in Linen Beige, Vegan Leather, and White Corduroy, or a custom fabric of your choice. Visit mobelli.co.za or explore in-store in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Mobelli’s weather-proof Bravo and Riva outdoor lounge suites tap into the interior/exterior trend perfectly.

The patio has become another room in the home, says Alon Sachs, joint founder of Mobelli. “One of our favourite trends is decorating the patio with furniture and decor accessories that look as though they were made for indoor use. Complete this seamless transition between indoors and outdoors by using soft furnishings such as rugs, scatters and throws.”

We’re partial to Mobelli’s Bravo and Riva outdoor lounge suites. The Bravo suite is available in two technologically advanced fabrics. Sunbrella flannel is soft to the touch but can withstand sun and rain and is resistant to mould and mildew. The other fabric option is a microfibre leather in white that is water-resistant, so you can simply wipe rainwater off the seats and sit down.

The Riva outdoor lounge suite is a stylish modular option with powder-coated legs and soft-grey upholstery. It can be left outside all year round.

“The right room layout is crucial to enjoy the space optimally,” says Alon Sachs, co-owner of Mobelli Furniture + Living. “It should be done with precision to allow easy flow in and out of the area. And equally important — know how you want to use the space.”

“Establishing the right furniture layout should not be considered a chore,” he adds. “When done correctly, it creates a balanced and harmonious look and feel, as well as a modern and elegant living space.”

Not sure how to go about it? Take note of these six need-to-know layout tips.

Take Measurements: Step one — determine the size of the area. Grab a tape measure to establish the exact dimensions and remember to measure the dimensions of the entrance too. After all, the size of the entrance will determine the size of the furniture.

Visual Interest is Vital: To get this right, consider incorporating a range of furniture pieces with different characteristics. If you’re opting for a serene and calm area for rest and recovery, keep the furniture pieces similar to avoid “visual noise”.

And if lively and energetic is what you’re after, throw in a curated piece of artwork and match it with an extra large sofa.

Balance with scale: The size of various furniture pieces in relation to each other, versus the size of the space speaks to the scale of the room. Consider different pieces to create height and depth in the space. In simple speak, aim to create unity when the balance is out and pieces just don’t look and feel right.

Symmetry and asymmetry: Whether you prefer two of everything and an organised and balanced room layout, or two lamps in slightly different sizes on one of your side tables, both symmetry and asymmetry are two widely used decor trends.

Time for the triangle: This principle can be used effectively when decorating your indoor living area. Place two side tables alongside a sofa with a piece of artwork above to create a ”triangle” effect in the room.

Incorporate Zones: Divide large or long living areas into zones and create an intimate indoor setting. Zoning into separate dining, conversational or relaxing areas gives a once wide-open space a cosier look and feel.

Revamping your space is easy – you can do it with any budget. Here is a list of some of the hottest furniture trends to help get you started.

Going Retro!

From innovative material combinations to dynamic shapes, designers are having a lot of fun with the retro chic trend. Get inspired by eclectic shapes and eye-popping designs – it’ll be dominating the market throughout 2018.

Modern Retro

Include a dose of nostalgia in your layout using retro-inspired furniture and accents. This trend adds a modern twist to stylish furniture designs from the past. With a little retro charm, any room can become a functional work of art.

Start by choosing a colour scheme or retro element that captures your style. You may prefer the contrast of soft earthy tones and metallic accents or prefer to incorporate blending materials like marble, wood or industrial steel. Each of these elements come together to design a modern space. The Darya chair is a great touch to bring that retro feel to a room, combined here (above) with a marble-and-wood coffee table.

Shape Trends – Go Geo or Organic

Retro designs incorporate unique blends of geometric and organic silhouettes. Consider ways you can utilise one – or both – in your layout.

Geometric shapes are captured in every way you can imagine. You can find angular sofas with defined lines or tables featuring intricate geometric detailing. Simple touches like squared bases or geometric cut-outs add visual interest to tables and accent cupboards. The Gramercy side cupboard is a perfect focal piece to harness this trend. Geometric structures create a calming ambiance in your home. It’s a stylish design that stimulates a sense of serenity, down to the smallest detail.

Organic shapes are also blended into retro sofa designs. Curvaceous seating arrangements boast relaxing appeal before you even have a chance to sit on them. Soft shapes are pleasing to the eye but the experience gets even better when you sink into plush cloud-like cushions wrapped in warm, earthy fabrics.

Mixed Materials

Expect to see eclectic blends of materials and textures throughout 2018. Blending the past with the present, classic designs like accent tables with natural wood tops are finished with contrasting materials such as industrial metal. The mixed material trend continues with retro chic inspiration, like wooden occasional tables featuring luxurious marble-top accents.

It’s All In The Detail

Simple pieces of retro decor completely transform the ambiance of your lounge. The best features of this trend are found in its attention to detail. Simple shapes and unique material combinations are emphasised with stylish modern elements. Retro furniture emphasises attractive features with a modernised twist. Enjoy soft upholstered furniture set upon glossy metal legs or accents like angular footing that enhances the furniture’s appeal and interest. Add timeless touches to this nostalgic trend with tufted button detailing or walnut inlays that contrast soft fabrics.

Known for its fine outdoor furniture, Mobelli is now using the same principles of practicality, quality and comfort for its newly launched indoor range.

It all started with his search for a good sun lounger, says Mobelli co-founder Alon Sachs. Today, the business sells not only sun loungers but also lounge suites, coffee tables, accessories and more. Plus, the Mobelli Buyback programme means customers can trade in their old Mobelli outdoor furniture, regardless of the condition, and get 30% off the price of new items.

“We know that furniture tastes and circumstances change,” says Alon, “which is why we created this guarantee: Upgrade every five years and own Mobelli furniture for life.” We chatted to Alon to find out more.

What makes Mobelli stand out?
The Mobelli philosophy is all about easy, practical living and quality furniture that is designed for purpose. Our outdoor furniture is made to withstand the elements, which means it is entirely fuss-free. And yes, the furniture must look great, but it must also be comfortable to sit on and be enjoyed for as long as you want.

What spurred the decision to create an indoor line?
I realised there was a gap in the market for beautiful quality furniture that is still attainable. We wanted to make Italian-inspired, comfortable furniture that is accessible to more people. Many pieces offer a modern-retro look.

How do you come up with the designs?
The designs embrace family and social living. Practicality is important, too.

Alon Sachs, co-founder of Mobelli Furniture + Living says creating the ultimate outdoor space is easy with the right furniture – there are key pieces for any outdoor space. Sun protection is crucial, and if your outdoor area is not under cover, an umbrella is definitely a must-have. Water-resistant seating is also quite handy around a swimming pool.

Know Your Space

Knowing your space is key. Feature a piece that makes a statement. If it’s a large piece crammed into a small space, that’s a big no-no. “Find what works for you and your home,” says Sachs.

Extend and Expand

Define your patio with an extendable table. This hidden expandable innovation gives you the flexibility to add a few extra seats to your table should impromptu guests decide to join the festivities.

Comfy and Cosy

Consider smaller pieces of furniture for that cosy look and feel. Smaller furniture items are also able to be moved around with ease and can make a space seem bigger than it actually is.

Drinks On Wheels

Having your very own mini bar, tucked in a corner with all the drinks paraphernalia, can come in handy when entertaining. If the party moves from the patio to the pool, the drinks trolley can easily follow.

Beautifully Lit

Transform your entertainment space with wireless LED lights for a soothing, subtle atmosphere during dinner or a late-night round of drinks. And since adopting an eco-friendly approach is necessary to reduce our carbon footprint, LED lighting is the recommended choice.

Fine Geometric Lines

Stay on-trend this season with textured, symmetrically-patterned furniture. If you’re keen on this look, the Lexington sofa is a must-have. Its appearance boasts straight, elegant lines with slim arm rests, combined with a luxurious fabric and a quilted leaf motif. The Lexington enhances just about any indoor space and creates the ultimate living experience.

“What’s special about this sofa is that it’s not only a beauty, it’s extremely comfortable as well and you simply won’t go wrong with it,” says Alon.

Perfect and Practical

In an evolving, modern world practical living is key, and what busy homeowners really need is the convenience of removable slip covers with maintenance made simple and hassle-free.

“In other words, phoning a specialist cleaning company is a thing of the past, simply clean your furniture covers yourself – it’s easy and cost-effective too,” says Alon.

Retro Done Right

Are you in search of the ultimate storage solution? The Gramercy side cupboard is the answer. Made from walnut veneer with trendy tapered feet, this piece of furniture is certainly retro done right. “With its mirrored finish offset with walnut veneer honeycomb sections, the Gramercy is a masterpiece,” says Alon. “It can act as a side cupboard or as a home for special tableware or glassware for entertaining.”

Mixed Materials

Ever wonder about the marble-wood combination? Mixing materials is on-trend, and nothing says style better than the well-crafted Delta coffee tables. “These tables are both classy, yet simple and fit just about any indoor space,” says Alon.

Nesting Is Nice

The lounge tells a story, and for those wanting to effortlessly create a focal point, why not pair together three tables? “The Tribeca tables are well-suited for the nesting concept and bonus is, they look good too,” says Alon.
