’n Kunsinstallasie by die Spier-wynlandgoed in die Stellenbosse wynland herinner ’n mens dat kuns nie tot galerye beperk hoef te wees nie. Dié grootskaalse werk deur Marco Cianfanelli bestaan uit ’n mosaïekbeeld op nege hoë panele wat kuns tot argitektuur verhef. Dit verleen ook ’n funksionele kwaliteit aan die werk en nooi toeskouers om hulleself as’t ware in die kunswerk te werp.

“The Dying Slave” deur Marco Cianfanelli is opgerig by die kruising van twee wandelpaadjies op die Spier-wynlandgoed. Net soos Marco se veelgeprese Madiba-installasie bestaan dié werk ook uit verskillende panele wat saam ’n prentjie vorm.

Marco het sy grootskaalse beeld gegrond op Michelangelo se bekende figuur van ’n manlike slaaf in sy sterwensoomblikke. Hy het ’n foto gebruik, maar die beeld digitaal geskep en in pixel-lyne verdeel wat in mosaïek herskep is deur kunstenaars van die Spier Arts Academy. Die doel met dié skool is om opleiding én werksgeleenthede in kontemporêre mosaïekwerk te verskaf.

“Ek was aanvanklik bekommerd dat die rowwe gevoel van die klipmosaïek wat gebruik word, nie sou werk om ’n gladde diditale effek te skep nie,” sê Marco. “Maar nadat ek die eerste voorbeeld gesien het wat in die ateljee geskep is, het ek besef die ryk tekstuur en die intense kleur van die glas pas perfek by die konsep.”

An installation at Spier in the Stellenbosch winelands is a reminder that you don’t have to visit a gallery to be exposed to art. The large-scale piece by Marco Cianfanelli features a mosaic image set on nine tall columns and takes art into the realm of architecture, giving it a functional quality and inviting viewers to submerge themselves in the work.

The Dying Slave by Marco Cianfanelli sits at the junction of two footpaths on the Spier wine farm. Like Marco’s acclaimed Madiba sculpture, the work features columns that together create the completed picture.

Marco based his large-scale image on Michelangelo’s well-known figure of a male slave in the throes of death. It was created digitally, using a photographic source, and then digitised into lines of pixels, which were created in mosaic by artists from Spier Architectural Arts, working in conjunction with the Spier Arts Academy to offer employment-based training in contemporary mosaic.

“Initially, I was concerned that the roughness of stone mosaic used would not be conducive to achieving a slick digital effect,” says Marco. “After seeing the first sample created by the studio, I realised that the richness of texture and the intense colour of glass added an incredible dimension that made perfect sense with the concept.”
