An extensive panel of judges for the 2021 Innibos National Craft Awards has been announced, ensuring excellence in rewarding innovation and skill.

Each judge brings their own area of expertise to the selection process.

The judges for 2021 include:

Thabisa Mjo,the owner and founder of Mash.T Design Studio.

Amos Letsoalo, the head curator of the Polokwane Art Museum.

Maureen Waldeck, the brand manager of Tourvest Destination Retail’s stores and retail brands.

Malibongwe Tyilo, a journalist, multimedia content producer, content strategist and editor.

Annemarie Meintjes, the editor at large of VISI magazine.

Over 150 entries have already been received for the 2021 Innibos National Craft Awards.

Crafters have until midnight on Friday, August 13, 2021, to enter.

You need simply take a photo of your entry – next to a matchbox for size and scale, and either email it to crafts@innibos.co.za or send it to 071 621 3597 via MMS or WhatsApp. There is no entry fee.

As VISI’s 100th collector’s edition hits the shelves, we chat to artist Jody Paulsen about his artistic journey and what his 2014 VISI cover meant to him.

Five years ago, for VISI’s 2014 collector’s Design Issue, Jody, in collaboration with photographer Nico Krinjo, created four different covers based on his hand-cut felt artworks. “For me, whenever I look at that magazine, it represents such a transitional space in my life and in my career,” he says.

Located on a beautiful city farm in the middle of Cape Town, you’ll find the studio and showroom of design and art consultant, and founder of COUTH, Yelda Bayraktar.

Her workspace is filled with designs from across Africa, from tables and stools by Botswana’s Peter Mabeo to wooden sculptures by the late Babacar Niang. You’ll also find pieces created by renowned Cape Town-based designer Porky Hefer, who happens to be Yelda’s husband.

These Fancy Corners are the perfect places for relaxation and to indulge in cherished pastimes.

For Lucie, there are two spots in her home that stand out, namely a corner on the verandah and her small second studio space. Here she can indulge in her books and sketchbooks, eat breakfast and create works of art.

Axor, the designer brand of bathroom specialist Hansgrohe SE, revealed five prototypes for avant-garde mixer spouts in Milan.

Each year, as part of its WaterDream project, Axor invites a group of international architects and designers to consider water and the living space, and come up with designs.

For WaterDream 2016, Axor invited architect David Adjaye, furniture designer Werner Aisslinger, design group Front, design studio GamFratesi and architect Jean-Marie Massaud to conceptualise the ultimate water mixer spout for the bathroom of the future. It had to fit on Axor’s U-Base, a universal mixer base for spouts.

Ritual

David Adjaye’s bronze-and-granite sculptural creation, celebrates the ritual of modern living. The water itself is ritualised, from source to flow and eventually descent.

Mimicry

“We didn’t want to simply create a mixer, an object that dispenses water; we wanted to accomplish perfect integration into an architectural landscape,” says architect Jean-Marie Massaud about Mimicry, his tap design that sees the marble merged in harmony with the water.

Water Steps

Water Steps by Anna Lindgren and Sofia Lagerkvist of Front focuses on the playful exchange between water and form.

Zen

Zen, from design studio GamFratesi, is an interpretation of an Oriental bamboo fountain, exploring “the honest connection between water and nature in a spiritual way”, explains the duo, architects Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi.

The Sea and the Shore

The Sea and the Shore is German furniture designer Werner Aisslinger’s design. Made of clay, the design is a hybrid, combining the idea of a shelf and a fountain. The shelf symbolises the beach and the water fountain symbolises the sea, constantly filling the beach with fresh water.
