The Folly, local textile brand Mungo’s biggest and brightest beach towel to date, is a self-proclaimed happy accident.

“Weaver’s folly’ is what the team at Mungo explain as an error on the loom, which in this case resulted in a different outcome to what was initially planned for The Folly towel.

“On the warp for the Vrou Vrou we made a mistake, and then we made this mistake into not one, but three perfect products.

The towel is also named after the quaint town of Folly Beach in South Carolina, just south of Charleston where we have recently based our American online shop. A sleepy, surfer’s haven of a city, nothing says summer like its salty sea air, the sticky ice cream hands of small children, and a strolling along its iconic dock down by the water.”

The Folly is available in three colourways, Fiddler Crab and Blue Crab, creatures indigenous to the area of Folly Beach in South Carolina, where Mungo recently launched an online store.

Local textile brand Mungo has opened a new store and Micro-Mill on Cape Town’s Hout Street.

The concept behind the store was to create a space where customers and the public are given the opportunity to learn about and witness the art of weaving.

Although most of Mungo’s production will continue to take place at their primary mill in Plettenberg Bay, the Cape Town Micro-Mill will house and make use of an original Hattersley domestic loom from 1890; one of Mungo’s oldest.

Situated in a restored heritage building from the 1900s, Mungo’s Hout Street store has been refurbished, while continuing to keep all of the original architecture and features of the four-storey beauty, including sash windows, Oregon pine flooring and a wooden staircase. The Micro-Mill is situated below ground with the shop on the ground level, spanning into a glass atrium. The first floor features a photographic studio and the Mungo office, while the final floor is a Mungo-inspired apartment available for guest use.

The new Mungo store and Micro-Mill is located at 78 Hout Street, Cape Town.

Mungo has added the beautiful Quill blanket collection to their range of throws, blankets and bedding.

The design for the Quill Blanket is inspired by traditional weaving methods and the culture of the Nigerian Yoruba people.

Experimenting with patterns and colour, the Yoruba were not limited by the techniques available. Weaving on broad looms, women would produce pieces for domestic use while men created ceremonial wear on narrower looms. Some pieces were embellished after weaving with the addition of repetitive patterns by means of a dyed-dipped quill, which has led to Mungo’s Quill range.

Each piece is woven from 100% cotton and comes in a range of sizes and colourways, including atlantic blue, fossil and slate grey.

Double retails at R1 995, King at R2 394 and Super King at R2 559.
