Luxury accessory label Missibaba has launched a new store in the Trumpet building in Johannesburg’s Rosebank.

Established by Chloe Townsend and Lizel Strydom, the popular label has launched its latest store in the Trumpet building on Keyes Art Mile; the exciting new hub of art and design in Rosebank. The unusual space was originally intended to be used as a storage unit and features faceted lines, levels, angles and distinctive surface details.

Intended to be a physical reflection of Missibaba’s love for design and layered interior space, the team tackled the shop fitting project without the help of an interior designer. Their love for colour is conveyed through Freya Lincoln‘s specially crafted colour palette. Striking colours like Medlar (new orange), Pavo (green accent), Cabochon (pink accent) and Clew Cream were used in varied ways making for a sensory and explosive retail experience.

A gold vinyl panel pulls customers through the double-volume glass stack doors into the space that boasts a vintage McIntosh Sideboard from Decade, chrome standing lamps, a glass-top chrome table and inviting chairs. A banana leaf Hertex rug and lush, green plants in Liebermann ceramics bring a contemporary, urban jungle feel to the colourful store. The gallery space will be showcasing limited edition Missibaba collections, as well as welcoming other creatives to collaborate on new projects.

Luxury accessories brand Missibaba has just launched their latest collection, titled The Reference Section of The Sea Point Library.

“The collection came about because we were unable to travel to find inspiration, as we’ve done previously, so we spent a week at the Sea Point Library, trawling through the reference section, noses buried deep in art, design and gardening books, and old National Geographic magazines. It was absolute heaven!” explains Chloe Townsend and Lizel Strydom, the duo behind the brand.

Using appliqué and cut-out techniques, the pair created three different patterns in multiple colour options. The first is called The Quilt, which was inspired by an image of an Amish quilt in the Museum of American Folk Art; the second is The Tropicana, “a byproduct of a watermelon print paper-cutting session,” and finally The Pineapple Scallop, an off-cut paper creation.

Earlier this year, the creative duo behind leather accessories brand Missibaba, designer Chloe Townsend and her business partner Lizel Strydom, found themselves inspired by Cape Town’s World Design Capital 2014 buzz.

They started thinking about how they could express its ‘Live Design, Transform Lives’ theme, and that’s when they decided to approach some of the country’s leading design and artistic talents to recreate their signature weekender Missibaba BOOMBOX bag.

The result? A range of nine unique designs created in collaboration with well-known names such as fashion designer Stiaan Louw, artists Cameron Platter and Michael Taylor, and jewellery designer Ida Elsje. The Missibaba team also designed a colourful hand-woven version too. 

Missibaba hosted an auction on 25 September 2014 for the bags at the WHATIFTHEWORLD Gallery in Woodstock, Cape Town. The proceeds from the auctioned BOOMBOX bags will be donated to SHIFT, an organization that helps to empower youth and rural communities through skills transfer.
