Designed by the restaurant design aficionados, KT Interior Architectural and Interior Design Studio, the Flamenco Lounge is awash in rich, luxurious colours like deep purples, velvety blues, and sumptuous reds, creating a sensual, inviting ambience. The walls feature intricate patterns and textures which evoke the passion and energy of flamenco dancing and late-night jazz clubs in New York. Dimmed lights strategically placed around the room cast dramatic shadows, accentuating the sultry, mysterious feel.

The lighting plays a central role in the design of the Flamenco Lounge. Strategically placed dim lights create dramatic shadows, enhancing the sultry and mysterious ambience of the venue. A large disco ball installation hangs from the ceiling, casting sparkling reflections that add to the dancefloor-inspired feel of the space.

Seating arrangements feature Comfy tub chairs custom designed by KT Interior Architectural and Interior Design Studio, with plush upholstery reminiscent of a luxurious jazz club, offering the perfect place to unwind. Decor touches like candles in ornate holders, vintage record players playing soft jazz tunes, and small vases filled with deep red roses all add to the music-inspired atmosphere.

Whether you’re seeking a night of dancing or a relaxed evening with friends, the upstairs area at La Parada Melrose Arch provides the perfect setting for an indulgent experience.

The new La Parada in Rosebank by hot new design studio KT Interior is a quirky mix of indoor jungle, Spanish bistro flair and retro metro station – all in one hip spot.

Situated in The Firs centre, the well-known tapas restaurant has various branches across the country, all with a unique vibe – this version being its eighth edition. 

KT Interior, headed by Kobus Truter, was the mastermind group behind La Parada’s new restaurant. They’re also the team behind a plethora of other equally striking restaurants, including Egghead Diner – which has recently been shortlisted for the 2022 Restaurant And Bar Design Awards. “I find my inspiration with travelling and social media and working with the entire team to achieve something special for each project,” explains Kobus. “We have a group of various tastes and styles in the office and it assists me to achieve something different. We also work closely with our clients and listen to what they want and like.”

One of the main features of La Parada is the striking tiled green bar that prominently takes space in the centre of the restaurant. Complimented with black and white checkered tiling, hanging ceiling plants and tropical wallpaper creates an “away from home experience” transporting visitors to a lush oasis of food and drink. “We are always looking at what is trending, what is new and what is happening,” elaborates Kobus. “We more and more evolving design around customer experience and instagramability. Designing spaces and restaurants are not just a practical experience but it should trigger emotion.”

The airy dining space adorns a lively palette inspired by Spanish eateries. A floor-to-ceiling wall dressed in wild jungle print tastefully juxtaposes a myriad bespoke furnishings and vibrant artworks. In an aesthetically pleasing marriage between old and new, a dominating mural by renowned street artist Faith 47 is contrasted by an impressive Chesterfield-style studded leather sofa.

Curlicued balustrades lure guests to the second level where the private whisky bar, The Durrage, awaits amid a velveteen atmosphere aptly punctuated by a miniature forest of indoor plants. The double-storey space also boasts noteworthy views of the harbour and bordering peaks of Table Mountain.

Carnivores, vegetarians and vegans are sure to find something they like on the expansive and accommodating menu.

A new La Parada restaurant has opened its doors, bringing a bohemian edge to Cape Town’s Constantia Nek.

Based on the original La Parada on Bree Street, the new restaurant offers authentic tapas by chef Martin Senekel.

The impressive interior boasts detailed pressed ceilings, a bold mix of chairs and lampshades, as well as a statement golden bull’s head.

Inspired by the Spanish bars of the Mediterranean, the restaurant exudes a boho-chic, vibrant atmosphere, perfect for a casual lunch, birthday celebrations or after-work drinks.

The restaurant is situated next to stylish seafood spot Harbour House.

With new restaurants and stores continuing to pop up in Bree Street, the urban heart of the Mother City is burgeoning. South African Market (SAM) is one such treasure that recently opened its doors to the public, situated just above the trendy tapas restaurant, La Parada. The beautifully designed loft space sells a variety of products – from furniture to leather goods and jewellery – designed by some of our country’s most talented artisans. We spoke to designers and co-founders Naomi Bossert and Berlinda White about the store’s concept, the transformation of the space and the importance of e-commerce in a digital age.

How did the concept of a truly South African one-stop-shop come about?

Being designers ourselves, we struggled to find the right stores to stock our products. We also found that there was a lack of variety so we began our search for designers who would be interested in having us stock their products. We were truly amazed by the amount of good designers scattered across South Africa.

With Cape Town being World Design Capital 2014, did you plan on opening the store specifically for this reason? It does seem perfect, doesn’t it?

We started working on the SAM concept two years ago and 2014 was definitely one of our aims, but we were quite lucky that all the pieces fell into place.

Bree Street has become a very popular location for bespoke stores and fine restaurants. How did you come across your current space and does the hustle and bustle influence your own creativity?

Funnily enough, we found the space by randomly driving down Bree Street. We were searching for an industrial-looking space for quite a while, but couldn’t find one in a preferred location. When we entered the space, we where sold. The loft was a blank canvas and with it came the opportunity to truly curate a collection of the best of South African design. We love being on Bree Street. It is a creative hub that attracts a lot of locals and internationals – it truly is a place where you can let your creativity run wild.

You teamed up with architect Jakob Basson to transform the space. What was your aim with the interior?

We really wanted the interior to reflect the best of South African interior design. Jakob Basson has a great eye for design. By combining this with his sense of spatial awareness, he was able to create a playful space that complements the products we stock. We approached well-known furniture designer Xandre Kriel to produce the stunning wooden shelving.

SAM houses a variety of locally produced goods. What criteria do these goods adhere to in order to be stocked?

We only stock South African design. We feel that there is a thin line between craft and design in South Africa and we strive to have the shop be a proper reflection of the latter. We love duality and never choose similar designs. Products need to be original and of good quality. We regularly sign new designers to ensure that we have a constant flow of fresh products, making SAM worth a visit every week.

SAM will also run an online shop. How important is the e-commerce element in this day and age?

It is extremely important. We want SAM to be the first thing people think about when they think “South African design”. E-commerce allows us to connect and reconnect with the global community.

Looking towards the future, where do you see the brand in a decade?

We would like to take the brand nationwide and then expand to other countries. Our aim is to change the image foreigners have of South African design.
