You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better table companion than Kino’s new dining chair – whether you choose a striking and playful colourway, or an elegant wood finish.

Handcrafted, stackable, made from solid wood: the Kino dining chair is a piece worthy of a place at any table. Use it to add a fun, colourful element to a clean-lined dining space, or keep things subtle with a pared-down natural ash or American walnut finish. Design duo Nico Hendriksz and Anton Louw (pictured opposite) explain further.

How did Kino come about?

We both have a background in industrial design. A combined woodworking workshop in 2013 led to a nursery furniture range called Kind (Afrikaans word for child), but we soon realised that it was time for the brand to grow up and develop into something more. With a small alteration to our logo, we became Kino – a high-end furniture brand. Everything is designed and manufactured locally by our small team of skilled and passionate craftspeople.

Kino

How would you describe your design aesthetic?

Ideas for new products are often sparked by experimenting with new manufacturing processes. Although we have never set out to design a product to suit a specific style, most of our work is Japandi (Japanese-influenced Scandinavian style). Our design process happens organically – it is a natural form of self-expression – and our approach has always been towards clean, minimalist detailing.

What sets this dining chair apart from others?

Its design and proportions make it visually ”light”, considering it is a sturdy, solid-wood chair. The many colour options and finishes give clients the freedom to make a space unique and exciting. The fact that the chairs are stackable (up to four) makes them super-practical should you need to store them – and economical for global shipping too.

What type of wood do you use?

Ash is used for all the colour options. This timber has a beautiful grain, which becomes even more pronounced when colour is applied. Usually, chairs in colour finishes don’t boast the unique natural texture of timber.

Is it all manufactured locally?

Yes, every detail from design to manufacturing is done in-house at our workshop in Durbanville, Cape Town. This allows us to have complete control over quality and lead times. In terms of product development, we share the design process. Nico takes the design into 3D modelling and technical drawings, before passing them on to Anton, who is in charge of production.

100% Extraordinary at 100% Design South Africa https://visi.co.za/100-extraordinary-at-100-design-south-africa/ Wed, 24 Apr 2019 06:00:31 +0000 https://visi.co.za/?p=577158 The 100% Design South Africa pavilion, titled 100% Extraordinary, will be showcasing a series of unusual designs from leading local brands.

The 100% Design South Africa pavilion at Decorex Cape Town, which runs from 1 – 5 May 2019 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, is titled 100% Extraordinary, and will be showcasing a series of unusual designs from leading local brands.

The display of creative and unusual objects is a collaboration between the curators of 100% Design South Africa, Platform and local manufacturers and designers.

The theme, Botanical Office, explores an alternative idea to ordinary, bland office spaces, pushing the boundaries of what co-working spaces and open-plan offices have become over the years.

“The botanical theme is a no-brainer for me,” says Creative Director of 100% Design South Africa, Cathy O’Clery. “I feel people have a huge desire to connect with nature these days and I see no reason why this can’t come into a workplace. Cape Town is a beautiful city surrounded by the most extraordinary nature – there is no reason not to bring that into a space where we spend the majority of our time.”

Each brand and its respective design pieces have been carefully curated and chosen in consultation with Cathy, with the intention of pushing boundaries.

“In keeping with the intention of this year’s pavilion, I have chosen products and pieces from designers whose work already stands out,” says Cathy. “Ordinarily, their designs are gloriously idiosyncratic and unmistakably their own, but for 100% Extraordinary they have progressed this even further, into exciting, fresh territory.”

Participants in 100% Extraordinary include furniture designers Kino and Houtlander; textile designer David Bellamy; ceramic artists Louise Gelderblom and Mervyn Gers; lighting designers Hoi P’loy; office furniture manufacturers Entrawood and carpeting specialists MONN.

100% Extraordinary at 100% Design South Africa will be held at Decorex in Cape Town from 1 – 5 May 2019 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. For more information, visit 100percentdesign.co.za.

WORDS Mary Garner

Cape Town-based furniture design studio, Kino, has just won the Best of 100% Talent award at 100% Design South Africa.

Founded by Nico Hendriksz and Anton Louw, Kino focuses on manufacturing quality furniture that exudes a timeless quality, fine detailing and expert finishes.

Kino’s designs are currently divided into three separate collections. The bedroom-focused Slant range, which includes clothing rails, beds, bedside tables, benches, cupboards and mirrors, are made from European white beech and birch plywood with matt black finishes.

The Lucy range is made up of pieces ideal for children’s rooms or nurseries, including a cot, rocking chair and compactum, made from birch plywood with soft blue-grey and charcoal accents.

Klip is a collection of coffee, console, bedside, dinner and side tables, designed as stone slabs, nested in solid timber frames. They are available in natural ash and black ash.

“We do not sacrifice quality for quantity,” says Nico and Anton. “We have a small workforce and this ensures that every product gets the personal attention it needs during production. Our products are designed to be original pieces that serve an aesthetic and functional purpose.”

The Botanic Cupboard, a special piece revealed at 100% Design South Africa, was created in collaboration with wallpaper designer Robin Sprong.
