According to those in the know, we spend a third of our lives in the bedroom, so why not let this inspire you to make your boudoir as beautiful as possible?

BACK TO BLACK

A little bit of monochromatic magic, along with exotic props and natural accessories add to the allure of this well-travelled bedroom.

GET THIS LOOK:

  • Instead of opting for standard black and white, paint the bottom two-thirds of the walls with the dark grey of Plascon Shark’s Tail (P3-E1-1) and the top third with Plascon Ivory White (Y4-B2-3).
  • Create contrast with white, wood and other natural elements, like the rustic wooden stumps that double as bedside tables; hand-stitched, vintage French linen; and earthy, handmade bedding from natural fibres.
  • Paint the ledge above the bed in the same colour as the back wall and stack with framed artworks in different sizes.
  • Vintage books are repurposed to sculpt a three-dimensional map of Africa and add interest.

Accessories:
Wooden pedestals and sheepskin rug, Nap. Folded paper shape, Poetry. Black and white bowls, Imiso Ceramics. Copper ceramic horses, Haas. Paper light, Weylandts. Antique French linen sheets, textured plain throw and African motif white and navy throw, all Artefect. Vintage French linen pillowcases, Le Brocanteur, 021 761 9142. Cream and black throw, dark grey linen throw and black, hand-printed scarf, all LIM. Art on wall from left: Black Africa, Present Space. Paper Africa by Keri Muller, Abode. Small block-mounted road print and unframed trees, Nap. Painted seascape by Swain Hoogenworst, Haas. Large framed abstract print by Atang Tshikare, Stable. Ceramic plate, Africandy. Small rectangular framed photo, Martin Osner. Wooden Africa, Quirky Me. Circle-design framed print, Nap.

THE BED WORE RED

Warm reds, shades of white and “greyge”, striking art and minimal clutter make for a clean, serene contemporary sanctuary.

GET THIS LOOK:

  • Keep the background neutral by painting the walls “greyge” (not quite beige and not quite grey and very on trend right now) with Plascon Double Velvet Fresh Linen (Y3-E2-3).
  • Steer clear of clutter and opt for a very clean, contemporary look with two or three high-design elements as highlights.
  • Choose accessories that are stripped of detail to let the print above the bed act as a focal point. Opt for original art rather than prints when attempting a high-design look.
  • Instead of investing in a bright red duvet cover, bring in understated red accents with an undersheet and scatter cushions.
  • Ground the look with a felt carpet that also adds texture and an element of masculinity.

Accessories:
Mirror by James Eales, faceted side table by Natalie du Toit and tall black jug, all Stable. Faceted small cement bowl and books, Africandy. White standing lamps, Weylandts. Carpet, Fibre Designs. Art on wall by Vanessa Berlein, Haas. Linen sheets, Aldona. Egyptian cotton pillowcases and duvet cover, both @home.

Porcelain, cactii, knits, stitches, cork and felt – this years’s Design Indaba Expo saw textures, folds and innovative creativity like never before. Stylist Marian Ward had a wander around the expo and sent us her personal favourites. She said: “Prestigious international stores, such as Anthropologie, boast designs from London to New York – and now South Africa too! Please do the same in your own home. Choose one unique hand-made piece of local furniture or ceramics as a feature for your living space. Pick something that is both functional and decorative.”

WORDS Claire Jowell

Why is getting new stationery so exciting? Having pretty things to write on, write with, put in, stick up or give out just makes work and home feel a little more fun. Since the explosion of the popular Washi tape, we’ve been keeping our eye out for super cute South African designs on the stationery scene.
