A small Japanese town called Kamikatsu is home to the award-winning zero-emissions Kamikatz Public House.

Designed by architects Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP, the building is made entirely out of recycled materials and waste. The town is currently recycling 80 % of the waste produced and aims to be at 100 % in the next few years. Kamikatz Public House, which houses a brewery, bar and accommodation facilities, has received the WAN Sustainable Building Award for 2016.

Kamikatsu’s main feature is a striking eight-metre tall window made entirely from reclaimed abandoned window frames. The windows can be opened in the summertime, and during winter the interior is heated with a carbon neutral radiation heater. The flooring is composed of reclaimed tiles and the wallpaper reuses newspaper. Even the chandeliers are made from bottles.
