Rooted in the idea that adornment is a form of self-expression rather than mere decoration, Black Betty Design’s new I AM collection explores grounding through materiality and symbolic forms.

Cast in gold with an earthy palette of intentionally selected stones – Garnet, Red Onyx, Smoky Quartz, Black Spinel and Pearl – each piece is designed to sit close to the body, embodying a simple idea: adornment is not decoration; it is a declaration, a ritual.

“Jewellery has never been about decoration for me. It has always been about meaning. About what you choose to carry on your body. With I AM, we are finally naming what Black Betty has always been. A place where adornment becomes something lived, not just worn,” says founder Kristin Weixelbaumer.

The new collection was brought to life in collaboration with Justine Barnes, an Ashtanga practitioner, Yoga Nidra guide, breath and energy teacher with more than 25 years’ practice. As a model, muse and spiritual anchor for the collection, Justine embodies the philosophy I AM was built around: the idea that jewellery is more than a seasonal expression.

“We’re not designing for trends. We’re designing for the body and for what people are going through internally. Most jewellery is about how something looks. KWA’s Afrocentric handcrafted jewellery is a true blend of traditional materials and modern aesthetics with a focus on personal expression. We spoke with KWA to find out more about the brand’s ethos and its commitment to creating contemporary pieces that honour the past.

What is the meaning behind the name ‘KWA’ and the inspiration or story that influenced its selection?

KWA, which translates to “(over) there” in Setswana, evokes a sense of distance – an imagined, ideal place that lies ahead or just out of reach. Rebranding to KWA marked a pivotal moment, a return to our roots, both personally and as a brand. This signalled a new chapter and a broader commitment to our spirit of experimentation. We aim to bring the feeling of that aspirational space into everyday life, encouraging personal expression and nurturing a sense of connection and community in the present.

How would you describe your jewellery design aesthetic?

Our design aesthetic bridges the past and the present, blending traditional and historical motifs with contemporary design principles. Each piece is rooted in cultural memory yet reimagined through a modern lens, resulting in jewellery that feels both current and timeless. By honouring heritage while embracing innovation and individuality, we create pieces that carry stories across generations.

Where do you look to get inspired?

At KWA, we look to people and their connections – we predominantly draw inspiration from cultural symbols and materials, which we see as evidence of these relationships, shared histories, identities and individual stories.

Your use of materials like cowrie shells, seedpods, and pearls is distinctive. What is the inspiration or reason behind these material choices?

KWA distinctively incorporates Cowrie shells, Job’s Tears beads and Pearls as our primary accents, to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Botswana and the wider African continent. Each of these carries rich cultural symbolisms that deeply align with our essence. Cowrie shells, once used as a form of currency on the African continent and beyond, symbolise wealth, fertility, womanhood and spiritual protection. This anchors our designs in ancestral power and legacy. Job’s Tears beads, native to various parts of Southern Africa and Asia, represent healing both spiritually and medicinally. Pearls, long revered across African coasts and royal lineages, embody purity, wisdom and strength. Together, these elements not only adorn the body but also reconnect wearers with cultural pride and spiritual continuity. Additionally, sourcing these materials supports local artisans and communities, reinforcing our commitment to sustainable and ethical fashion.

Can you describe your brand in three words?

Afrocentric, Experimental and Sustainable have always been our driving themes.

What emotions or narratives do you aim to evoke in individuals who wear your jewellery, and how do these stories reflect your brand’s mission?

We aim to empower our wearers with the freedom to express their individuality while embracing and celebrating their African heritage. Each piece in our collections is intentionally crafted to be more than just jewellery; it’s a canvas for self-expression that merges personal style with cultural depth.

Designed with comfort and versatility in mind, our pieces are perfect for everyday wear yet effortlessly elevate any look. Through our designs, we hope to inspire a meaningful connection to the continent’s traditions and history, inviting wearers to honour their roots while showcasing their unique identity proudly.

Can you share your creative process of bringing your jewellery pieces to life?

Our creative process begins with identifying materials that are readily available to us – often ones traditionally used in other contexts. After finalising the jewellery design, the craftsmanship process begins with carefully selecting and preparing tarnish-resistant wire, which we have chosen for its durability and lasting shine. Using precision cutting tools, the wire is measured and shaped according to the design layout, forming the foundational structure of the piece, whether it be a pendant, bracelet, or pair of earrings. The wire is meticulously wrapped and manipulated with pliers to create secure loops, curves and settings for the jewellery accents. Natural elements like cowrie shells, job’s tears beads and pearls are delicately integrated by threading wire through their natural openings and wrapping them securely in harmonious arrangements that reflect the design’s aesthetic. Each element is fastened with attention to symmetry, balance, and structural integrity, ensuring they remain firmly in place.

Once the composition is complete, we use a clear UV resin to carefully apply to areas where components meet or where added reinforcement and a glossy protective seal are desired. The piece is then secured under a UV lamp, which hardens the resin and locks every element into place with a sleek, professional finish.

This final step not only enhances the jewellery’s appearance but also strengthens its durability, completing a handmade piece that merges natural beauty with skilled wire artistry.

How do cultural or historical elements influence your designs, and are there any African Modernism influences in your design approach?

Cultural and historical elements are central to our design process – they shape both the form and meaning of our pieces. We draw from symbols, materials, and practices across African cultures to explore themes of identity, memory, and connection. African Modernism influences us in how we balance tradition with clean, contemporary forms. While we don’t always reference specific works, we’re mindful of how we borrow from both heritage and the everyday aesthetics of our community. It’s a blend that reflects who we are – rooted, evolving, and connected.

Do you have any favourite pieces? Will you be adding any exciting additions to your collection?

Our favourite pieces tend to be the people’s favourites – and so far, the ring sets have stood out. There’s something about how they layer and speak to a wide range of people that resonates with us deeply. As for what’s next, we’re exploring small releases of accessories beyond jewellery – thoughtful additions that still carry the spirit of KWA.

With roots in Zimbabwe, international jewellery house Patrick Mavros has opened its first South African boutique at the V&A Waterfront.

Founded in 1978, Patrick Mavros began with a simple yet heartfelt gesture: Patrick carved a pair of earrings for his wife, Catja. This loving act garnered admiration from her hairdresser, sparking the beginning of what is now Africa’s definitive luxury jewellery and objets d’art brand, celebrated worldwide for its exquisite design and craftsmanship – and the Mavros family, including sons Alexander, Forbes, Patrick Jr and Benjamin, continues to uphold its legacy.

While the brand prefers to keep its esteemed clientele private, it has a notable global following of celebrities and leaders – including Denzel Washington, Hugh Grant, Bruce Springsteen and Catherine, the Princess of Wales – with dedicated fans regularly seeking out the Mavros family for custom pieces.

A hallmark of Patrick Mavros jewellery has always been an unwavering attention to detail in each handcrafted item. “You can easily tell from across the room whether a piece is Mavros or not,” says Alexander. The unmistakable style is a testament to the passion for craftsmanship passed down from Patrick Sr to his sons. Characterised by a particular look, feel and energy, the brand’s designs are distinct thanks to a process that’s rooted in tradition.

Using the “lost wax” technique, which is thousands of years old, the process involves making a detailed wax model of each piece, which is then encased in plaster. Once the plaster hardens, the wax is melted away, leaving a mould into which the materials are poured. This ensures that every detail is captured. “Our design process is not prescribed,” says Alexander. “There is no formula to how you start something and how you finish it. My father is a freewheeling artist who abides by no laws. He taught us that when you’re inspired, you just roll up your sleeves and do it.”

Sterling silver and 18-carat gold, both African-sourced, are used exclusively – an integral part of the Mavros identity. “Sterling silver in particular is very ingrained in our way of designing and creating,” says Alexander. “It is renowned for being the most reflective metal, making it a beautiful medium to enhance the details of each design.”

For the Zimbabwean brand, each creation is inspired by the rich tapestry of African culture, wildlife and natural beauty. “Every item, every collection, is linked to a story – we do not make anything that does not have a personal story that’s meaningful to us as a family,” says Alexander. “And we aim to tell each story colourfully and proudly.”

The Mavros family’s mission is to highlight the beauty of Africa through their objets, and to be Africa’s leading luxury lifestyle brand. As Alexander explains, “America has Tiffany, France has Hermès, the rest of Europe has its luxury houses… Then you look at Africa, a continent with so much mystique, intrigue and romance – who do we have? It’s our mission to show the world what our continent has to offer.” And this extends to conservation efforts: the brand supports various foundations on an ongoing basis, and aids others through proceeds from product sales. We chat with Kate Bohm, owner of the Cape Town-based jewellery brand Thor Collective (also featured in our round-up of 31 local jewellery design brands) about her new swoon-worthy collab with South African artist Alexia Vogel.

How did the Thor Collective jewellery brand come about?

Thor Collective was founded on a strong mother and daughter bond where jewellery design became something of a love language.

How would you describe your jewellery design aesthetic?

We’re all about creating jewellery that is made to be worn by you – a Thor women is graceful, strong, who moves elegantly and effortlessly. Our jewellery is specifically designed with this in mind. We create pieces that are classic, delicate and minimalist – characterised by simplicity and clean lines featuring delicate and understated pieces.

Thor jewellery is an extension of your style and memories. Pieces to celebrate the big and small things, telling a story of the people and occasions you hold dear and the tiny moments we find in the everyday. These are pieces that create the foundation of your jewellery layering.

Tell us more about ’Swoon’, your new collaboration with South African artist Alexia Vogel?

We always wanted to create an everyday stacking bangle that caught your eye. It was very important to Thor that it was a local South African artist as we love local and wanted to showcase local talent. We have always loved Alexia’s watercolours, especially her jungle and palm trees and feel so lucky we got the opportunity to collaborate with another female entrepreneur.

Describe the inspiration for ‘Swoon’ from the artist Alexia Vogel?

The inspiration for Swoon came from one of Alexia’s favourite paintings from 2019 titled, Sticky Fever II. It’s a large oil painting that evokes an abstract, luscious jungle landscape, a sticky sweltry place. She honed in on the colours and shapes to create the tiniest design, which was a really fun challenge. The painting itself is a work that to Alexia is quite immersive and lush and she hoped to create a small glimpse of that warm, sweaty sensation that the artwork evokes in her into a piece of wearable art.

Describe your brand in three words.

Graceful, timeless, sophisticated.

Where do you look to get inspired?

At the women I surround myself with, the everyday women I see… and of course Pinterest.

Any local up-and-coming jewellery designers on your radar right now?

Certainly not up-and-coming but I admire the PICHULIK brand and woman behind it.

What are your jewellery trend predictions for 2024?

Bold bangles! We think the bold gold jewellery and colour trends will continue into next year and gold hoops are here to stay, too.

We know you’ve just launched ‘Swoon’, but are there any other exciting launches or collabs in the pipeline for next year?

We have two new special gold necklaces still launching this year and are hoping to do some more collabs with artists next year.

PICHULIK‘s new store at the V&A Waterfront instantly transports visitors to a realm of serenity, a stark contrast to the bustling shopping centre that surrounds it.

The meticulously crafted space embodies the very essence of PICHULIK – a brand renowned for its handcrafted jewellery, contemporary African design, and sculptural forms inspired by feminine mythology.

The vision came to life through a unique collaboration between Katherine-Mary Pichulik, Tracey Chiappini Young and Xandre Kriel. Together, they imagined a space that defied convention, where artistry and commerce would merge seamlessly. The store’s spatial dimensions were carefully crafted using classical geometrical principles, using horizontal lines to draw the eye upward, evoking a reverence reminiscent of a temple or cathedral.

One of the standout features that sets PICHULIK apart is the complete customisation of every element within the store. Traditional jewellery display elements like busts and T-bar stands were intentionally omitted in favour of a more artistic approach. Collaborating with ceramist Belinda Ormond, PICHULIK created the “PICHULIK Deities” – porcelain heads that serve as unique displays for their earrings. The displays themselves are works of art, with ceramic rope gracefully undulating through them, providing the perfect elevation for showcasing bracelets and neckpieces. A Vorster & Braye vessel dipped in pristine white, takes on a new purpose as it showcases the brand’s bespoke bracelets.

“A curvaceous and minimalist sculptural retail environment, that mimics the sculptures of Barbara Hepworth, Constantin Brancussi and Modigliani with the texture and gravitas of classic greco-roman marble artefacts. In contrast to the traditional shopping centre environment, the new store was designed to feel temple-like, serene and elevating. A gentle dance with form and texture- providing an inviting backdrop where the PICHULIK pieces are the focal point,” elaborate Katherine-Mary Pichulik and Tracey Chiappini-Young.

In terms of the collections on display, visitors can expect to explore the brand’s key ranges, exclusive limited edition pieces, and seasonal releases. Every item tells a story and is infused with the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship and contemporary African design.
