The Barceló Torre de Madrid Hotel has received a luxe redesign thanks to Spanish designer Jaime Hayón (who we previously featured here and here).

The upgrade sees Hayón’s vision brought to life, taking guests on a “visual journey through Spain’s past.”

As guests enter the 1957 Madrid hotel, built by architects Julián and José María Otamendi Machimbarrena, a large black-and-white striped bear in a top hat is there to greet. This sets a playful and flamboyant tone for the rest of the decor.

Jaime uses a jewel-toned palette throughout the 258-bedroom hotel, offsetting the colours with statement art and sculptural pieces.”I was fully dedicated to the creation of a very special and unique space that would represent a new vision of Spain, a vision far from the traditional aesthetic,” he explains to Dezeen. Combining a contemporary flair with humorous elements ensures that the interiors are sophisticated, yet edgy.

The light fixtures and furnishings used are from Hayón’s own collaborations with designers such as Fritz Hansen, &Tradition, Gubi, Arflex, Cassina and BD Barcelona.

The five-star Barceló Torre de Madrid Hotel is also home to a wellness retreat, two restaurants and the Garra Bar.

Caesarstone has released the first instalment of a year long collaboration with Spanish design guru Jaime Hayón (who we previously featured here).

The project, entitled Stone Age Folk, which was recently unveiled at the Interior Design Show in Toronto, features a range of Caesarstone’s signature quartz in the form of tabletops, wall hangings and cabinet fronts.

Each piece portrays a stylised face, with Jaime using inspiration from old folklore, ranging from Hungarian myths to African masks and fables. The faces are constructed from a selection of small pieces of engineered quartz, which are slotted together in a process called marquetry.

The series will be expanding for Milan Design Week in April 2017.

Award-winning Spanish artist and designer Jaime Hayón, who is speaking at Design Indaba 2016, has not only created furniture pieces and lighting designs for some of the world’s most renowned brands (think Magis, Cassina and Bisazza), he designs interiors across the globe too.

A previous winner of Maison & Objet’s Designer of the Year (view more about this year’s winner here), Jaime has exhibited all over the world, including shows at London’s Design Museum and Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Moooi has released a range of striking new products created by top international designers for their 2015 furniture and homeware collection, which is currently on show in Milan.

Among the new designs are a few pieces by the Dutch brand’s co-founder Marcel Wanders, including the Power Nap Sofa and “Arion,” a large, limited-edition unicorn rocking horse, made from wood and finished with silver embellishments.
