Setamono Japanese Homeware, a contemporary Cape Town-based homeware boutique, brings the everyday joy of Eastern ceremony into your home.

If you head to Setamono in The Cape Quarter Lifestyle Village, you’ll discover a treasure trove of bespoke lifestyle accessories hand-picked from selected suppliers throughout Japan. The curated collection includes a singular selection of top-tier Japanese tableware, cookware, knives, hibachi grills, binchotan charcoal, decor, organic incense, furoshiki, bed & bath accessories, matcha necessities, and much more.

Inspired by Japanese craftsmanship, Setamono brings sophistication to South African homes. The term Setamono originates from a revered place in Japan, known for its centuries-old tradition of crafting exquisite tableware and culinary essentials. With a nod to this legacy, Setamono transcends borders to redefine the concept of fine living and unique gifting. ”Setamono takes the Japanese importance of specialism and the emphasis on ritual and ceremony, and brings it to South Africa in a way that is accessible but does not lose the exclusivity,” says Darrin Morrisby, owner and founder of Setamono.

Setamono Japanese Homeware

Darrin drew his inspiration for Setamono from a deep passion for exclusive hospitality and design. This passion was cultivated over two decades with his experience in the fine dining industry, extensive travels, and dining in some of the finest Japanese restaurants worldwide. Darrin’s journey began with his growing admiration for Eastern culture, ethos, and attention to detail. This admiration led him to explore Japanese homeware in London, Japan, and eventually, South Africa.

“I wanted to add a new element to dining out in South Africa, which seemed generally a little uninspiring when we moved here in 2015. We canvassed opinions from many of the top chefs at the time and there was a real appetite for newness,” he says.

Travelling to Japan over the recent years has only amplified Darrin’s love and appreciation of all things Japanese. “At Setamono, we embrace the philosophy that every object should spark joy and enhance everyday living. From the unparalleled precision of Japanese knives to the exquisite simplicity of tableware, each item is curated to evoke a sense of delight and wonder,” says Darrin.

”We identify a niche in the market and then work backwards to find suppliers who fit with our commitment to craftsmanship. Our focus is on brands which are not widely found in the South African market,” he explains. ”We’re also part of an incredible business incubator programme and have informal consultants in Japan assisting with identifying new and emerging opportunities.”

While Setamono’s roots may lie in the realm of culinary craftsmanship, the boutique has evolved to encompass a diverse array of Japanese treasures reimagined for modern living. ”It’s not just functionality… it’s about the experience of using these products and how it enriches your day-to-day life”. | setamono.co.za

Award-winning designer, Keneilwe Mathoe of Neimil has released a new capsule fashion and homeware collection called “Meadow Bloom”.

Founded by Keneilwe and photographer Lubabalo Mxalisa in 2018, South African-based Neimil focusses on interior design, fashion, and art. The brand’s latest capsule collection Meadow Bloom is characterised by flowing silhouettes, soft textures and delicate embellishments which evoke the timeless beauty and vibrant hues of nature.

Neimil Meadow Bloom

“Meadow Bloom is an ode to life and growth and healing; a reminder that a brand-new start will blossom just as flowers do in the spring,” says Keneilwe. “There is an open meadow at home in Mpumalanga where many go to pray and just connect again with nature and observe the long grass swaying in the distance. This sense of tranquillity and serenity evoked a sense of nostalgia and renewal in me and inspired the designs.”

Equally evocative of renewal, pieces from the homeware collection included scatter cushions, cutlery and crockery, sideboards, and accessories in shades of blue with pops of colour.

Poetry’s new homeware range of relaxed modern furniture, decor and textiles is an ode to the ‘art of living well’.

Poetry‘s new Poetry of Living Collection, which includes hard furnishings like tables, beds and cabinets as well as other large format soft upholstered furniture like sofas, armchairs and beds, has been carefully crafted with comfort, aesthetics, and individuality in mind.

The latest collection draws inspiration from far-off travels and diverse global traditions. The Poetry design team travelled the world seeking out artisans who share the brand’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

“In a world filled with mass-produced items, we believe in the importance of craftsmanship, the beauty of high-quality natural materials, the passing on of heritage and generational wisdom, and in celebrating the makers and artisans who bring these visions to life. This commitment extends to supporting craftsmanship communities both locally and abroad. With artisans, there is an energetic value in their creativity. Hands carving and then pressing block prints, working lathes to carve large shapes, and moulding clay. Natural raw materials are grown and nurtured, carved and shaped by hand,” notes the brand.

The Poetry design team looked at three design aesthetics for the new range:

  • Modern Classic – a seamless blend of contemporary elements which bring a touch of elegance to a space.
  •  The Romantic – a modern take on traditional design.
  •  The Gypset – embraces artisanal craftsmanship and natural materials for a grounded, earthy setting.

Poetry has also expanded on its textile and kitchenware offering with this collection to include bedding, towels, scatters, crockery, bakeware and cutlery.

H&M HOME has announced its latest collaboration with renowned Parisian fashion house, Rabanne. Known for its futuristic designs in plastic and metal since the 1960s, Rabanne is now making a bold statement in the world of home decor.

Launching on November 9th, the Rabanne H&M HOME collection will be available in South Africa at H&M stores in Sandton City and V&A Waterfront, as well as online on Superbalist.com.

This collection, a result of the creative partnership between H&M HOME and Rabanne’s Creative Director, Julien Dossena, offers a sophisticated twist to traditional interiors. It’s the most extensive home decor collection ever seen in an H&M designer collaboration. Moving beyond just a few accessories, H&M wanted to create a collaboration where fashion and homewear meet.

The collection features Rabanne’s signature metallics and 1970s-inspired geometric prints, adorning table-top accessories, loungewear, and soft furnishings. From metallic vases and candleholders to monogrammed trays, bottles, and even a set of dice and playing cards in an elegant silver case, this collection has it all. You’ll also find organic cotton and luxurious wool loungewear, including monogrammed towels, blankets, and robes, along with eye-catching cushions in striking geometric prints.

“When it came to the H&M HOME element of the collaboration, I was very excited, because it’s the first time I’ve designed a collection of objects and homeware. Our founder Paco Rabanne was obsessed with covering everything in metal, and he designed some metallic furniture in the 1970s, so it felt like an authentic extension for the house. I liked the idea of embellishing the lifestyle element of the ready-to-wear collection to incorporate home décor items that complemented the luxurious mood of enjoyment. Julien Dossena, Creative Director of Rabanne, shared, “This interiors collection felt like an authentic extension of the house’s iconic fashion. We wanted to enhance the lifestyle element of our ready-to-wear collection by incorporating home decor items that match the luxurious mood. For instance, there’s a fantastic silver lamp that shimmers like our iconic paillette party dresses, offering an innovative take on a Rabanne classic.”

Each piece in this collection is designed to make a statement and is built to last. They’re crafted from high-quality materials, including stainless steel, recycled zinc, recycled polyester, organic cotton, and wool, ensuring durability and timelessness.

Evelina Kravaev-Söderberg

Evelina Kravaev-Söderberg, Head of Design & Creative at H&M HOME, expressed her excitement, saying, “Rabanne was the perfect collaborator to merge fashion and interiors. We’re thrilled to present a diverse collection that combines the house’s heritage with a contemporary twist, making these pieces ideal gifts for the holiday season.”

Proudly South African brands already available at H&M South Africa from some of SA’s top exciting talents include Shopfox, Plantify, Botanicus and Moodmakers. For H&M HOME’s second instalment of its For The Love of Art capsule collection, the brand has joined forces with local female artist Lulama Wolf, resulting in a playful homeware range.

Bringing art and interiors together, H&M combined its affordable and stylish creations with two renowned female creatives – South African Lulama Wolf and American artist, author and poet Amber Vittoria.

Bringing art, individuality and creative expression to the forefront, the range is set to encourage expression through homeware, bringing character and design into personal spaces around the country.

Lulama Wolf H&M HOME For The Love of Art collection

“Art and interiors go hand in hand at H&M HOME. Empowering young female creatives and providing them with an additional platform through our Love of Art initiative, allows H&M HOME to both inspire customers with the artist’s talents, as well as adorn their homes with it. This new collection makes for beautiful keepsake interior pieces for the modern home. We hope our customers will love it as much as we do,” says Evelina Kravaev- Söderberg, Head of Design & Creative at H&M Home.

Lulama Wolf’s work is inspired by modern African art and Neo-expressionism, with an emphasis on deep pigment techniques featuring earthy hues and organic forms. “I have always said that I want my work and art to reach and impact more people in a way that honours where I come from; and H&M HOME has made that possible with this collaboration. The homeware collection is a functional curation of pieces that I hope people cherish as much as I cherish how they become part of my journey with each purchase. I truly hope that this global collaboration lives to be a symbol of what I would like to continue to do with my work,” says Lulama Wolf.

Her range consists of hand-painted plates, tufted cushion covers, a rug and a jacquard blanket.

Multifaceted creative Amber Vittoria wants to represent the nuances of womanhood. She works with abstract forms, ribbons of colour and joyous words in her art.

The H&M HOME For the Love of Art collection launches in select stores and online on 16th March 2023.

Concrete Studio & Skinny laMinx Coasters

Playing and having fun creating patterns has always been at the heart of Heather Moore’s Skinny laMinx brand. “After spotting the patterns I generated during my #100daysofpattern challenge last year, Charmaine Nolte of Concrete Studio approached me about producing a range of concrete tile designs,” says Heather. And so a collaboration between the two brands formed and a range of fun tiles was launched.

Fast forward a few months and the idea behind the tile range was transferred to coasters. Our limited edition concrete coasters come in four different patterns and add a pop of colour to any table.

From a recent trip to Portugal visiting the country’s leading furniture, textile and ceramic brands, VISI editor Steve Smith picks two handcrafted tableware standouts.

Costa Nova

tableware

Since 1998, Grestel has been designing and manufacturing Costa Nova stoneware products, from tableware, kitchenware and bakeware to decorative pieces. What caught my eye on the afternoon I spent at their showroom and factory were the Livia and Lagoa Eco Gres collections. The organic silhouettes of the Livia range look wonderful in the matte-speckled mauve-rose glaze, while the sustainable Lagoa Eco Gres range, made of recycled clay, features contrasting glazes-matte and dark grey on the exterior, and translucent white and black on the interior.

Vista Alegre

tableware

A blue riband Portuguese brand, Vista Alegre has been making fine porcelain, crystalware and glassware on the same premises since 1824. If you’re in ever in the vicinity of Aveiro, its museum and hotel are definitely worth a visit. The revered brand not only makes tableware for embassies and heads of state, but you’ll also s pieces displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. I loved the two ranges inspired by art, architecture and design of the early 20th century. The colourful Futurismo is a nod to the vibrancy and optimism of the Futurist art movement, while the Emerald range is all about the golden era of Art Deco.
