Renowned architect Frank Gehry, who designed the striking Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, talks about his inspirations in this video by director Emile Rafael, in collaboration with the art institution itself.

“How do you create feeling with a building?” asks Frank in the above clip. It’s something that the architect has explored for many years.

This remarkable building, previously featured here, is inspired in part by his love of sailing.

“Most buildings are very static, but I like the idea of the movement, of the sense of movement, that it has,” he says. “There’s a transfer of this feeling through the bricks and mortar and steel that’s kind of amazing. It makes me want to do more.”

Search for MPK 20 on Google and one of the first results that pops up is #mpk20 on Instagram. It’s allowed us to get a first look from within Facebook’s new Frank Gehry-designed 40 000 sqm headquarters in California. It’s the biggest open-plan office in the world.

Yesterday, some other Instagrammers and I had the opportunity to visit @facebook HQ and take a first look at their new building: #MPK20. It’s a huge, open floor plan space designed by Frank Gehry. It looks like a fun place to work, and it opens today! Fun fact: FB worked with 15 artists on the new artwork in the building. Every piece was created onsite and is meant to speak abstractly to what FB does—many of the pieces are a nod to connections, community, networks and systems. Fashion designers Karl Lagerfeld and Christian Louboutin, Comme des Garçons creative director Rei Kawakubo, industrial designer Marc Newson, architect Frank Gehry (who is responsible for the exciting new Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris), and artist Cindy Sherman each created an exclusive limited-edition piece.

Says Arnault, “We wanted to present Paris with an extraordinary place for art and culture, and demonstrate daring and emotion by entrusting Frank Gehry with the construction of a building that is emblematic of the 21^st century.”

The aim of the Fondation is to encourage constant creation and innovation and make modern and contemporary art accessible to everyone. Essentially an art museum, it will be home to permanent collections, temporary exhibitions and installations, as well as performances and educational talks.

Located next to the Jardin d’Acclimation in the Bois de Boulogne park in Paris, the building is made up of 12 glass sails (comprised of 3 600 panes) supported by wooden beams and a collection of large white blocks, which has earned it the nickname, the “iceberg”.

“The 13 500 square metres of glass roofing is made up of unique panes, developed with the aid of innovative technology,” says Gehry. In fact, the entire project was brought to life thanks to one digital program from Gehry Technologies.

Despite its strikingly progressive design, the building still manages to tie in with its natural surroundings, not only via rooftop gardens and its ability to collect and recycle rain water, but in the way that it literally reflects the nearby trees and specially built water garden. Sustainability was an important part of the design process. “The environmental targets of the Fondation are so high that it has been chosen as the pilot project for the preparation of a new HQE (High Environmental Quality) standard dedicated to cultural buildings,” explains Gehry. | fondationlouisvuitton.fr.
