WORDS Lynette Botha

A thought-provoking brief led to innovative interpretations – and resulted in the beautiful all-wood Future Heirlooms collection.

Last year Always Welcome and the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) joined forces to release a first-of-its- kind collection created by seven South African designers. The collection, aptly named Future Heirlooms, asked designers to think freely in order to create an object or a piece of furniture that encapsulates the themes of sustainability, longevity and quality. The lineup of notable South African talent invited to partake included Dokter and Misses, Mash.T Design Studio, TheUrbanative, Kumsuka, Kalki Ceramics, Joe Paine in partnership with Nathan Gates, and NØDE.

Using American red oak, the seven pieces were brought to life by hardwood furniture designer-manufacturers Houtlander, and timber importers BOS Timbers. They are “a celebration of material and memory, and ask pertinent questions about our approach to the environment,” says AHEC regional director Roderick Wiles. The designs – one- off functional objects and small furniture pieces – were displayed at Always Welcome’s Viewing Rooms in Sandton until November, before moving to Always Welcome Heritage House in Cape Town in January 2023.

The Always Welcome team hopes this project inspires important discussions around sustainability in South African furniture design.“We’re extremely proud of the work produced for Future Heirlooms,” says Garreth van Niekerk, director and co-founder of the collective. “Many of these ambitious pieces would have been impossible without the expertise and careful eye of our partners Houtlander, and the support of AHEC and BOS Timbers.”

Pieces include the Now Now digital grandfather clock and repository for family information and memorabilia by Joe Paine and Nathan Gates; Family Portrait – a playful, photo-inspired furniture piece – by co-founders of Dokter and Misses and new parents, Katy Taplin and Adriaan Hugo, and the Fulani chair by TheUrbanative’s Mpho Vackier.

“We aspire to be a brand that not only celebrates stories but also respects the way in which we tell those stories,” Mpho says. “But more than anything, for me, exploring a new material is always exciting. My approach to most of my work is guided by the material, its properties and limits, and letting it have a say in the final piece. Using sustainable American red oak is not only logical but very necessary for us to do justice to the authentic essence of those stories.”

View the full collection and learn more about the inspiration behind each piece at Always Welcome Heritage House in Cape Town until the end of February.

At a new cooperative store in Hyde Park Corner, Johannesburg, lovers of local design are most definitely Always Welcome.

It’s a design co-op,” says Always Welcome co-founder Garreth van Niekerk, “similar to how YDE [Young Designers Emporium] works.”

There are similarities — a drive to support local talent; a brand started as seismic societal shifts occur (YDE was launched the year after a democratic government was formed; Always Welcome opened during a global pandemic); and that the brick-and-mortar store lives in a mall.

But Garreth is talking mainly about the business model – a cooperative one, in which the designers featured in the store all contribute to the costs of running the space.

Doing so helps to mitigate the risk for everyone, and gives established and emerging makers greater access to new audiences and shoppers. The idea was born during the Covid-19 lockdown, as many businesses were closing and the unemployment rate soared. After a big decor magazine title closed its doors, Garreth was left wondering how designers were going to operate in this new landscape.

At the time of writing, 23 designers and makers were involved, including Dokter and Misses, Houtlander, Joe Paine, Mash.T, Okra Candle, Trevor Stuurman, TheUrbanative and Wiid Design. By the time this issue is on shelf, Always Welcome will have added brands such as Kirsten Goss, Abode and Monn – and launched an e-commerce site, too.

Across the way from the store’s welcome mat in Hyde Park Corner is Tashas, and its neighbour is Apsley House. In other words, Always Welcome couldn’t have asked for a better location. And walking into the showroom feels like stepping into a beautifully styled home that would sit comfortably in a magazine feature showcasing the best of South African design, room by room. Art-directed by Vincent Truter and designed by Stephen Klein (whose luxury portfolio includes 2A, Metropolitain Cosmetics and Spitz footwear), it took an intense six weeks from the time of the first partner meeting to figure out how all the pieces could work democratically in the space, knock down a few walls, and open the doors.

Currently a pop-up, Always Welcome plans to travel the country with its concept, inviting designers who correspond to the city they’ll settle in for a bit to activate unused shop fronts and perhaps unexpected environments. Garreth would love to make the Hyde Park Corner store an anchor, and says that the space has already helped to close the gap between the makers and the market.

Also planned for the future are in-store family lunches and meet-the-maker talks, as well as event collaborations with other retailers to, as Garreth puts it, really make design more approachable.

WORDS Amelia Brown

Local design duo Dokter and Misses have launched a new collection of sculptural lights, entitled Moonjelly 2.0, that were the result of a week-long visit to the Ngwenya Glass factory in Swaziland.

In celebration of the Ngwenya Glass’s 30th birthday, local designers were invited to the factory and, with the Ngwenya team and top local and international glassblowers, were encouraged to explore the age-old medium of glass blowing. Dokter and Misses chose to push glass-blowing conventions and bend recycled glass orbs over steel structures. The end result appears melted and Dali-esque, and the juxtaposition of sharp and soft, steel and glass, delivers on the whimsical design language that Dokter and Misses has become renowned for.

“We had an idea of what we wanted to do, but we had no idea whether it would technically work,” says Katy Taplin, co-founder of Dokter and Misses with Adriaan Hugo. “So this really is the result of our play.”

After several experiments and functional problem-solving, the duo devised a series of 27 pieces that includes standing lamps as well as single and cluster pendants. The steel structures carry the bold Memphis-inspired shapes that have become part of the design studio’s signature. “I went back to an old computer programme that I used as a sketch book about 10 years ago,” explains Adriaan. “The limitations of the programme led the way for the shapes.”

The Moonjelly range is available at Dokter and Misses’ new showroom at 99 Juta Street in Johannesburg and at GUILD, Silo 5, Silo District, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. Prices range from R13 800 for a single pendant to R27 600 for a standing lamp.

A collaborative project between architect Clara da Cruz Almeida of Collaborate000 and interior and product designers Dokter + Misses was just launched at Sanlam Handmade Contemporary FoodWineDesign Fair in Joburg.

Locally designed and manufactured, the iDladla / lifePOD is a “modular, prefabricated nano-home” designed to challenge existing outlooks on urban and sustainable living solutions in Southern Africa.

The idea behind this compact 17sqm structure is that it will use minimal resources (thereby lowering costs) and create a convenient, comfortable and functional space for homeowners.

While each singular unit can be customised to the individual homeowner’s specifications, due to its modular nature, it’s also possible to combine more than one unit to create a larger property.

While the cost of a unit hasn’t been finalised yet, the team currently estimates that it could cost between R200 000 and R700 000 per unit.

For more information about this project, visit pod-idladla.com.

As Africa’s largest decor, design and lifestyle exhibition, Decorex never fails to offer visitors anything and everything they might need for a full home revamp, from wallpaper and floor cladding to fridges and kitchen sinks.

The ever-popular Johannesburg segment of the trade show took place at Gallagher Estate Convention Centre from 6 to 10 August 2014.

By far the most impressive aspect of Decorex was this year’s inclusion of 100% Design South Africa, a showcase of inspiring local designers. Just about every stand in this section offered quality design and excellent craftsmanship, but if we have to pick, here are few of our favourites:

  • Street design darling Atang Tshikare demonstrated his disciplined line drawings live, between chatting to visitors and selling some of his smaller prints. The self-styled surface designer and graffiti artist has sky-rocketed into the public eye with his customised sneakers, furniture collaborations and public murals. His work at 100% Design was part of a series for Robin Sprong Wallpaper, a stand that turned out to be a fantastic place to meet other impressive talent.
  • It’s here that we came across the work of Debby van der Veer, whose soon-to-be-launched brand Blandat pushes the parameters of drawing and textile design by fusing disparate imagery, such as foliage, flowers and hand grenades, with sensuous textures.
  • Long-time favourites Dokter + Misses (in association with VISI) collaborated with Swazi-based Gone Rural and Dauphin HumanDesign Group to create a contemporary workspace design that contrasted sleek, urban lines with organic shapes and textures. RAW also offered interesting design solutions for a fresh and clean office space.
  • Bronze Age, meanwhile brought in a strong masculine elements with its brutish figurines and studded bronze bowls.
  • Other notables were Meyer von Wielligh with their nature-inspired furniture pieces (which won best furniture design), MUD Studio with its amazing take on texture and surface design and Vogel for its minimalist, flowing organic pieces.
