Decorex Joburg is back with a multifaceted four-day event aimed at highlighting new design concepts and advancements in home decor.

100% Design Café

Wolkberg Casting Studios, a multi-award-winning participant at 100% Design and Decorex since 2017, is collaborating with Food, I Love You, a like-minded entrepreneurial brand in South Africa whose “Eat simple | Eat Together” concept resonates deeply with Wolkberg.

This collaboration on the 100% Design Café is a match made in design and food heaven! For the design of the experiential space, Wolkberg wanted to further explore the intersection between Design and Food. Wolkberg has crafted an elegant restaurant setting, providing the perfect backdrop for Food I Love You’s Harvest Table-style cuisine.

In the lead-up to the four-day event, Wolkberg will also be exploring insightful conversations around how interior design influences consumer behaviour in hospitality environments through their Podcast “In the Thick of Design”. Their goal is to raise awareness and show appreciation for the value good design brings to the restaurant experience.

Step Outside

Go alfresco with CREMA and step onto an Italian terrace designed by JVR Architects. CREMA will be breaking down the boundaries between inside and out, venturing into the open air with a refreshing new, all-encompassing, contextual take on outdoor design, adding new collections from archival and contemporary designers, as well as introducing outdoor versions of the existing indoor portfolio.

The Sleep Experience

Overhaul your sleep experience with customisable comfort, colour and quality at the Sloom stand D12 located on Level 5 in the Decor, Lighting and Design Hall. Founded in 2016, the South African mattress brand offers a unique mattress-in-a-box delivery concept. Once opened, the Sloom Mattress expands for a good night’s sleep.

“In 2015, I toyed with the idea of incorporating different comfort layers into a single mattress. It began as a dual-comfort mattress with two different comfort levels on each side. Later this evolved into a customisable mattress with four different comfort levels. Each layer contributes to the mattress as a whole, bringing the concept of a mattress in a box to life,” says founder Rudo Kemp.

Future Talks

The Future Talks series at this year’s Decorex Joburg encompasses a multifaceted exploration of topics ranging from sustainability and circularity to design entrepreneurship and the transformative impact of technology on the creative landscape.

VISI editor Steve Smith will be hosting two talks:

• 1 August at 12:00: “The Business of Sustainability” – a panel discussion with Cameron Barnes, Bianca Shapiro, MD of Wunders, and Maggie Infante, CEO of Infinite Industries. The talk tackles how to integrate sustainability into standard business processes.
• 3 August at 12:00: “Influencing the Influencers” – a panel discussion with Heath Nash, Head of sustainable design at Circular Squared, Nindya Bucktowar and Nikhil Tricam of Kalki Ceramics, designer and artist Walter Train and artist Zinhle Sithebe. The talk will take a look at what is inspiring the new stars of South African design.

Tom Dixon is fascinated with spherical objects and designed Globe, which is surprisingly one of his most minimal designs. It has a reflective, mirrored exterior in the day and then reveals the integral LED once it’s switched on. 

Globe is available as a pendant, floor lamp and its newest addition named BURST, which is a new extraordinary chandelier and comes in either copper or chrome finishes.

British design company Tom Dixon takes a fresh and futuristic approach to creating pieces for both interiors and exteriors. Their latest range – the evocatively named Cloud collection – is now available.

The highly reflective, bulbous and sculptural Cloud collection makes use of delightfully organic shapes. Says Tom Dixon, “The inspiration came partly from the natural world, such as cloud formations, and partly from my fascination with engineering techniques.”

And why aluminium? “We chose [it] as it’s the metal that’s powering the modern world and can be used to create big objects that are very light,” he says. “The natural grey metallic finish [that is a feature] of the raw aluminium also creates soft reflections.”

These expressive artefacts are handmade, hammered and braised in India by skilled artisans. Unique indentations are preserved, making each final product a showcase of the physical work – and skilled craftsmanship – that went into creating it.

1. Murat Yıldırım’s Furry Digital Paintings

Turkish artist Murat Yıldırım recreates famous works of art, from Edvard Munch’s The Scream to Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, giving the pieces a tactile, furry appearance. He recreates the paintings digitally, altering their appearance to look as though they’re made from flowing hair.

2. PAPERSYNTHESIS

PAPERSYNTHESIS is a paper floral studio established by Singapore-based paper artist Mabel Low. She was inspired to craft plants and flowers from paper after she found herself struggling to keep her houseplants alive.

5. KAMERS Blaauwklippen

KAMERS/MAKERS is running their first show of 2020 at Blaauwklippen in Stellenbosch, showcasing 150 local makers and artisans. There will be strict COVID protocols in place. Here are the details:

• The show starts on Friday 23 October 2020 and runs for an extended 10-day period – this is in order to spread the daily crowds out over a longer period.
• Trading hours: Sunday – Thursday from 9am – 3pm; Friday and Saturday from 9am – 6pm
• A cashless system will be in operation.
• Tickets must please be bought online in order to allow the KAMERS team to monitor daily attendance in advance. You will be able to purchase tickets at the gate, but if the show is very busy, online tickets get priority so you may need to wait a few minutes for people to leave before being allowed in.
• Reduced ticket prices: R60 online; R80 at the gate. This includes a KAMERS/Makers shopper bag, plus a Consol water bottle.
• COVID Protocols – no mask, no entry. There will be sanitisers at the main entrance. Numbers in certain marquees will be controlled to ensure adequate distancing.

Sensually sculptural and instantly recognisable, these Tom Dixon designs reimagine the ways in which lighting can work to elevate an interior space.

1. MELT STAND CHANDELIER

The Melt range is a collaboration between Tom Dixon and the Swedish design collective, Front. The lamps’ appearance is reminiscent of molten glass or the interior of a glacier, and the design was born out of the quest to create an organic, naturalistic lighting object. The ultraluxe Melt Stand Chandelier is one of the latest additions to this gorgeous range; pendants, table, floor and surface lights are also available.

2. OPAL ARC

Working with its German engineering partners, the brand designed a sculptural overreach lamp. Featuring an ethereal orb that hovers at the end of a long metal “wand”, the lamp is supported by a satisfyingly chunky metal base. The designers removed the commonly used dangling light bulb and replaced it with the latest Tom Dixon LED disc, making the Opal Arc an extremely powerful illuminating device.

3. CUT

Futuristic and faceted, the Cut lights feature a mirror finish when off, then transform into translucent kaleidoscopic gems as soon as they are switched on. Eye-catching reflections repeat within the diamond-cut interior. Produced in both chrome and smoke finishes, and a variety of sizes and fixture types, these are some of the latest adventures in the brand’s ongoing fascination with reflections and transparency.

4. SPRING

This series of three pendant lamps is made up of pliant stainless-steel “ribbons” in white or brass finishes, woven around a custom-made, dimmable Tom Dixon LED disc. The semi-transparent shape can be adjusted to form a variety of silhouettes, from a flat arrangement reminiscent of a spirograph drawing, to a flying-saucer configuration.

Designer lighting and furniture platform Créma recently added decorative lighting brand Parachilna to its extensive international range.

Deriving its name from a small Australian town, Parachilna is a Spanish brand that has become renowned for its striking lighting designs.

Parachilna’s designs, which are available in a range of sizes, are almost all made to order.

The collection includes the Gweilo, which is hand-made from acrylic; the Chinoz table lamp, inspired by the form of an antique Chinese vase; and the Beta, a simple, clean design featuring a marble base and glass diffuser.
