Going Green: Country Road Unveils New Sustainably-Designed Store

Country Road unveils its reimagined retail space at the V&A Waterfront, with the new store reflecting the Australian brand’s commitment to responsible design.

For the last four years, Australian luxury retail brand Country Road has been actively taking steps to create a more sustainable experience for its customers. This week, Country Road reopened the doors to its revamped, eco-conscious flagship store at the V&A Waterfront. The new store is targeting a 5-Star Green Star interior certification from the Green Building Council of South Africa. If awarded, this prestigious rating would highlight South African excellence in constructing healthy, environmentally responsible spaces.

“We worked on the concept with HMKM, a London-based firm, and in 2019, we opened our first flagship in Melbourne. We are very excited to open our first store of this concept in South Africa, where the concept is designed to reflect and take inspiration from the stunning Cape Town scenery,” says Alicia Buffington, Head of Store Design for Country Road Group.

The Country Road store at the V&A Waterfront is one of its largest stores at 993 m2 trading, and the space was designed to enhance the experience of customers while celebrating the concept of sustainability in fit outs.

Throughout the store, every consideration was given to ensure the store reflects Country Road’s commitment to responsible design. Fixtures incorporate recycled plastics, carpets are made using recycled polyester yarn, upholstery is made using recycled wool, and a curated collection of furniture is sourced locally.

“Our choice of materials focused highly on their inherent sustainability credentials, and we looked to source local materials, where possible. We included tiles that are locally manufactured, our flooring contains responsibly sourced timber and low-emission plywood, and the wall coverings contain a high percentage of post-consumer recycled materials. In addition, the lighting design is based on energy reduction and supplied and installed locally,” Buffington adds.

Country Road has joined forces with textile mill St Albans in a new cosy collaboration of scarves and throws just in time for winter.

The luxury range features a luscious blend of alpaca, wool and nylon oversized scarves and comfy throws perfect for beds and couches. The partnership between the two heritage brands showcases a celebration of fine textiles, local flair and bespoke craftsmanship. Now, working from the Eastern Cape, St Albans has produced and manufactured its renowned textiles globally since 1951. The range, now available exclusively from Country Road, is a testament to the quality and excellence of South African textiles in the international design community.

Timeless while being unique, the collection features earthy tones, blue hues, peach pinks and forest greens in a bold check pattern. “By partnering with specialist textile mills such as St Albans,” says the team at Country Road, “we are able to honour decades of expertise and craft and translate that story. A third-generation mill, St Albans is renowned for producing beautiful alpaca-wool textiles and manufactures locally in South Africa. We know our customers love to support local initiatives, so this partnership really was a natural fit for both brands.”

“The natural properties of the fibres are remarkable. It allows for excellent warmth without weight. It also has a beautiful natural handle and wonderful colour,” says Richard Gough, Managing Director of St Albans. Speaking of the collaboration, he says that working with Country Road has allowed St Albans and Hinterveld to work with fresh, new designers, to produce modern products using heritage textiles. With South African textiles at the heart of the design, the country is in the local and international design spotlight.
