The Trenery Guild, a collaborative project that has partnered quality and craftsmanship with some of South Africa’s leading artists and artisans, culminates at this year’s Investec Cape Town Art Fair, with a competition to assist emerging designers to jumpstart their futures.

The Trenery Print Competition challenges local talent to create a print design that will be featured in Trenery’s 2020 Summer collection. The winner will win an inspiring trip to France to attend an intensive two-week course in “Print Patterns & Trends” at the prestigious Paris College of Art.

The judging panel includes VISI Editor Steve Smith, as well as a team of Trenery textile designers based in Australia.

“We are looking for an inspired summer print with a unique South African interpretation,” says Bree Dhaliwal, Trenery’s Senior Textile Designer. “We want these young designers to consider a delicate balance between hand-drawn and contemporary graphics. The print should be bold and eye-catching, while staying true to Trenery’s ethos of timeless modern simplicity.”

As the exclusive fashion sponsor at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair, this year Trenery also pays homage to the 11 successful Guild collaborations with celebrated local artists and artisans, including Banele Khoza, Zizipho Poswa, David Krynauw and Lisa Firer, to name a few.

Drawing the link between the Art Fair and the brand’s intrinsic DNA, the stand presents an interwoven story-telling experience that visually narrates the craftsmanship that Trenery embeds within its collections.

For those who love print, pattern, colour, trends, fashion and design, visit the Trenery stand (S4) at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair from 14 – 16 February 2020.

Submissions in the LafargeHolcim Awards, the world’s most significant competition for sustainable design, are closing soon.

Entries in the 6th International LafargeHolcim Awards for sustainable construction will close on February 25, 2020. The competition seeks projects by professionals as well as bold ideas from the next generation that combine sustainable construction solutions with architectural excellence.

The Awards foreground projects and concepts from architecture, engineering, urban planning, materials science, construction technology and related fields.

The competition takes place in parallel across five geographic regions – each with its own jury of renowned and independent specialists. The regional juries are headed by Jeannette Kuo, Karamuk Kuo Architects (Europe); Reed Kroloff, Illinois Institute of Technology (North America); Loreta Castro Reguera, Taller Capital (Latin America); Mariam Kamara, atelier masōmī (Middle East / Africa); and Nirmal Kishnani, National University of Singapore (Asia Pacific).

The main category of the competition is open to architects, planners, engineers, project owners, builders and construction firms showcasing sustainable responses within contemporary building and construction. Projects must have reached an advanced stage of design, have a high probability of execution, and may not have started construction before January 1 2019.

In addition, students and young professionals (aged 30 years or younger) may submit visionary concepts and bold ideas in the Next Generation category of the competition. Submissions may be at an early stage of design – including research and design studio work.

Submissions are evaluated according to five “target issues” for sustainable construction that aim to clarify principles for sustaining the human habitat for future generations.

The winners will be announced in the second half of 2020 at Awards ceremonies in each region. The main winners then compete for the Global LafargeHolcim Awards in 2021, to be evaluated by a global jury headed by Hashim Sarkis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA and curator of the 2020 Venice Biennale of Architecture.

See previous winners here. For a step-by-step guide on entering the Awards, click here. To enter, visit lafargeholcim-awards.org/enter.

The LafargeHolcim Awards seeks leading professional projects as well as bold ideas from the next generation that combine sustainable construction solutions with architectural excellence.

The sixth cycle of the international competition is open for entries until February 25, 2020. The Awards offer a total of USD 2 million in prize money and foreground projects and concepts from the fields of architecture, engineering, urban planning, materials science, construction technology, and related industries.

Submissions in the LafargeHolcim Awards main category include sustainable construction projects at an advanced stage of design, with a high probability of realisation. Construction/fabrication must not have started before January 1, 2019.

The Next Generation category seeks visionary design concepts and bold ideas at a preliminary stage of design, including design studio and research work. To participate in this category, authors may not be over the age of 30. Students and young professionals are welcome to enter the main category with projects that have reached an advanced stage of design.

Independent expert juries in five geographical regions of the world evaluate submissions using the comprehensive “target issues” for sustainable construction of the LafargeHolcim Foundation. The criteria cover innovation and transferability; ethical standards and social inclusion; resource and environmental performance; economic viability and compatibility; and contextual and aesthetic impact. The competition promotes circular thinking and the reduction of CO2 emissions across all disciplines. It identifies the ideas with the highest potential to tackle today’s challenges to increasing urbanisation and to improve quality of life.

Submitting entries in the competition is free and must be made in English using a web-based form to provide information on authorship, a project summary, technical details, as well as project images and/or illustrations. A step-by-step guide explains the process in detail and shows how to prepare an entry at lafargeholcim-awards.org.

Since 2003, the LafargeHolcim Foundation advances the discourse on sustainable construction, mainly through its Awards, the world’s most significant competition for sustainable design. The Foundation is an initiative of LafargeHolcim, the global leader in building materials and solutions.

Episode 9 saw the main bedroom revealed and the VISI design duo securing their first victory.

After a trip to 100% Design South Africa for inspiration – and to mingle with fans! – in Episode 8, the design duos were back in action rising to their latest challenge: the master bedroom.

To suit the tastes of their fictional client, Team VISI revealed a contemporary bedroom. Continuing with the high-contrast and marble inspiration from the master bathroom, their bedroom featured a black, white and grey palette with pops of burnt orange and emerald green. Mpho Mphaga and Lesego Masekela collaborated with furniture designer Mpho Vackier on bedside tables inspired by one of her signature pieces. These custom tables, with a touch of modern African design, paired well with the custom designed Caesarstone credenza made entirely of various slabs.

In episode 9, guest judge interior designer David Muirhead joined regulars Donald Nxumalo and Katlego Kondlo to review the duos’ rooms. The judges enjoyed the practicality of Team VISI’s layout and furniture selection, noting the bold choice of wallpaper as well as a large circular mirror.

This challenge revealed the growth and talent of the design duos, and despite tough competition, the judges declared Team VISI victorious! Tune into SABC 3 on Fridays at 4pm to catch the show and to see what’s in store for the duos next.

Don’t forget to follow the hashtag #winahome on social media, and enter the competitions for weekly prizes and the grand prize – a choice of one of the three homes in the Eye of Africa estate, valued at over R3 million.
