Husos Architects transforms a tiny apartment in Madrid, Spain into the perfect shapeshifting home for a musician; it is at once a living space and an auditorium, a stage and a multimedia studio.

The renovation saw the 44 sqm site in Lavapiés upcycled and enlivened to reflect the character of its inhabitant, Spanish Musician and Performer Niño De Elche. The architects focused on four key points: preservation of existing elements, creation of budget-friendly and multifunctional storage spaces, integration of versatile lighting solutions and the employment of movable furniture.

The original floor and wall tiles in the bathroom and kitchen remain intact while a generous lick of paint helps turn the most aesthetically brutal area of the home, the kitchen, into an object de désir. The now sculptural space features blocks of white broken by brightly coloured luminaries made of household objects such as mop drainers, sieves, funnels and citrus juicers. Each can be activated independently to engage in playful conversation with the ethereal silver gloss of the curtains, creating interior atmospheres to suit every mood.

A metal rack system around the perimeter supports wooden shelves that are complemented by custom-made boxes for vinyl records, bracket speakers and guitar hangers. Curtains reveal and hide stored objects and create mini domestic stages. Customised furniture pieces, like a table on wheels and a sofa with reconfigurable cushions, further allow the apartment to morph from a multi-narrative living area into an abstract, seemingly taciturn space. Finally, a screen lowers and raises from the ceiling, turning the bed-couch area into a cosy auditorium or the living room into a multimedia studio.

Resa San Mamés student accommodation by Valencia-based creative studio Masquespacio features playful colour-blocked interiors that encourage creativity by allowing students to determine how spaces are used.

Created with university students in my mind, the brief sought a space that centres sharing experiences as a community. Located in Bilbao, Spain the 1850 sqm building comprises studios for 351 residents and areas for studying, socialising, meeting and dining.

All spaces – including the kitchen, dining room, study rooms, leisure rooms, gym and terrace – feature free-flowing, open-plan design dressed in an enlivening harmony of greens, pinks, yellows, lavenders and soothing blues. Reconfigurable furnishings afford residents the opportunity to make spaces work for them.

Acoustic glass walls in study areas afford silence, but can also be opened up to connect with an adjacent lounge. Yellow-accented wooden furniture on wheels, in the lavender-splashed kitchen, encourages reorganisation. Blue-painted bricks add texture to formal study spaces where red velvet curtains on circular tracks, around group study tables, allow for additional privacy.

The green dining space juxtaposed by millennial pink seating features oversized steps that make for an amphitheatre-like  arrangement, ideal for gatherings. Outside, the terrace features a continuation of the colour-blocks theme by placing green picnic tables within a green-zoned area and allowing different shades of blue to signal other areas of seating.

Luxury accessory label Missibaba has launched a new store in the Trumpet building in Johannesburg’s Rosebank.

Established by Chloe Townsend and Lizel Strydom, the popular label has launched its latest store in the Trumpet building on Keyes Art Mile; the exciting new hub of art and design in Rosebank. The unusual space was originally intended to be used as a storage unit and features faceted lines, levels, angles and distinctive surface details.

Intended to be a physical reflection of Missibaba’s love for design and layered interior space, the team tackled the shop fitting project without the help of an interior designer. Their love for colour is conveyed through Freya Lincoln‘s specially crafted colour palette. Striking colours like Medlar (new orange), Pavo (green accent), Cabochon (pink accent) and Clew Cream were used in varied ways making for a sensory and explosive retail experience.

A gold vinyl panel pulls customers through the double-volume glass stack doors into the space that boasts a vintage McIntosh Sideboard from Decade, chrome standing lamps, a glass-top chrome table and inviting chairs. A banana leaf Hertex rug and lush, green plants in Liebermann ceramics bring a contemporary, urban jungle feel to the colourful store. The gallery space will be showcasing limited edition Missibaba collections, as well as welcoming other creatives to collaborate on new projects.

In celebration of the opening, Missibaba has created a new collection of clutches, which you can browse in the above gallery. For more information, visit their website
