As part of Dulux’s Colour FuturesTM 2021 palettes, the brand has announced Brave Ground as its Colour Of The Year for 2021, an earthy tone that aims to reconnect us to nature.

Brave Ground (code CF21) serves as a solid base tone for building a decor scheme. The warm, neutral hue will pair well with a variety of contrasting and complementary colours.

“This warm, natural Colour of the Year provides a strong foundation for embracing change,” says Dulux Colour Expert, Palesa Ramaisa. “Brave Ground connects us back to nature and the simple things. It stands on its own as a beautiful, powerful neutral and can be used in a way that allows other colours to shine. Earthy and empowering, it evokes security, growth and potential to help us create environments that fill us with courage.”

“It’s been challenging this year to transform the key global trends into inspiring colour palettes,” explains Heleen van Gent, Creative Director of AkzoNobel’s Global Aesthetic Center (Dulux is manufactured by AkzoNobel). “We’ve seen unprecedented global change, with all of us facing experiences that feel out of kilter with the modern world. At the same time, we’ve rediscovered more positive things: solidarity in communities, strangers’ generosity, and the realisation that together we can do extraordinary things. We’re finding the courage to pick ourselves up and move forward. Our homes provide a sanctuary: a place to restore, repair and recalibrate ourselves on the road to recovery.”

Four colour palettes have been built around the Brave Ground shade:

  • Expressive: shades of red and pink, balanced against soft neutrals.

  • Trust: a collection of earth tones that aim to promote a sense of community and encourage collaboration.

  • Timeless: contemporary and traditional meet with shades of yellow against natural tones.

  • Earth: blues, greens and browns mimic the tones of the planet

Make a striking pendant light using two plastic glasses – and incorporate the Pantone Colour of the Year 2018 into your home.

The Pantone Colour of the Year 2018, Ultra Violet, is a deep purple that conveys intrigue, originality and ingenuity. It will undoubtedly boost sales in the commercial world, but designers and architects will always choose black as one of their favourite colours of any year!

If purple is your favourite colour you are in luck; if not, use it sparingly – in touches only. Make a striking pendant light using two plastic glasses: a translucent purple one topped by an opaque red beer glass. You’ll also need an electrical cord, a plug, a socket and a low-voltage LED (the plastic might melt if you use an incandescent bulb).

Drill a hole in the base of the two glasses and lace the cord through both of them. Fit a socket to the bottom end of the cord and a plug to the other end, and screw in the LED.

Good news: You can now get a 2 m length of silicone cord fitted with a socket on one end and a plug on the other from most electrical suppliers and hardware shops.

The golden Amadeus and subtle Pictured Rocks are Plascon and Dulux’s chosen hues for 2018.

Amadeus is a sunny, accessible, neutral colour that creates a warm, cosy feeling within a space. A richness and earthiness gives this hue an uplifting quality that will work well with minimalist interiors.

The colour complements greys and reds, as it highlights darker tones. While Amadeus has the appearance of being playful and lively, it can also be luminous and delicate.

The Dulux Colour of the Year, namely Pictured Rocks, is also known as Nordic Sails. This subtle, warm tone of mature pink draws on the tactile qualities of natural wood and leather.

Dulux Pictured Rocks

Pictured Rocks aims to make your home a friendly place to retreat to everyday, accentuating a feeling of comfort and ease within the home.

The highly anticipated Colour of the Year for 2014 has been announced to be… Pantone 18-3224 Radiant Orchid, described as “a captivating, magical, enigmatic purple”.

“An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute. “It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm. An invitation to innovation, Radiant Orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society.”

Since 2000, Pantone has annually hailed a colour to encapsulate a year – the first was an enigmatic blue, cerulean. Over the years, anticipation and significance of the announcement has grown and these days Pantone’s Colour of the Year has become highly influential in product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, home and industrial design, as well as product packaging and graphic design.

Says Leatrice: “While the 2013 colour of the year, Pantone 17-5641 Emerald, served as a symbol of growth, renewal and prosperity, Radiant Orchid reaches across the colour wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination.”

In terms of decor, Pantone suggests that we “spruce up interior spaces by incorporating this eye-catching hue in paint, accent pieces and accessories. As adaptable as it is beautiful, Radiant Orchid complements olive and deeper hunter greens, and offers a gorgeous combination when paired with turquoise, teal and even light yellows.”

“Likewise,” they go on: “the vibrant colour is sure to liven up neutrals including gray, beige and taupe. Uplifting and bold without being overpowering, Radiant Orchid reenergises almost any colour palette and provides a unifying element for diverse spaces.”
