Charl Edwards, who gave us a sneak peek into his home in VISI 74, is one of the most obsessive igers we know. We convinced him to put this obsession to good use by sharing his collection of objects and trinkets with us.

It wouldn’t be fair to call art director Charl Edwards a hoarder – although he definitely has a bit of the compulsive collector gene going on. But Charl’s collection is expertly curated, the clusters of objects arranged in his Tamboerskloof home are artfully arranged by theme, colour or type. Charl compiled an Insta-exhibition of some of these objects especially for VISI, and told us some of the stories behind the things he hunts down and gathers.

For more on Charl’s home and to see the spaces of seven other young Cape Town creatives, get your hands on a copy of VISI 74, in stores now. You can also follow Charl on Instagram (@charl_edwards).

Who said you have to stick to red roses for Valentine’s Day? Give your sweetheart a beautiful mixed bunch of flowers this year, something special and unique. Buy one or two beautiful flowers and round it off with a few green stems from your garden. Or order a bouquet of indigenous flowers.

Says flower expert Dané Erwee from Okasie: “Go for a more exotic bouquet of flowers with round shapes and pointed flowers. Let some of the longer flowers stick up above the greenery and the bouquet will immediately look bigger and more luxurious.”

The tropical trend has hit our stores like a tsunami. On the catwalk, exotic birds peep through delicious green leaves and flowers in rich jewel-like colours are bringing an island-style to our living spaces. “Combine leafy grass green plants with full-colour animal motifs, not to mention positioning a perky parrot on your sideboard. The bigger and more exotic, the better,” says stylist Marian van Wyk.

It’s pattern season – think geometric shapes, symmetry and repetition. Adding an exotic and ethnic edge ensures lots of character. If you want to pair contrasting patterns together, balance is important. Play bold geometric lines off delicate patterns and make sure there’s at least one accent colour to create an impact.

Colour blocking is trending across fashion and decor. Pair a few primary colours or play around with pink, turquoise and lemon. “No need to wait for the shops for inspiration. Create your own colour blocks when you set a table: yellow placemat, blue plate and lime green side plate for a full-colour day,” says stylist Marian van Wyk.
