This beautifully shot video follows Alaskan master carver and artist Wayne Price as he creates works of art from cedar wood.

While he crafts totem poles, jewellery, artworks, bentwood boxes and wood carvings, in this clip he makes an adze from scratch, a tool he describes as the one “that did it all”.

master carver

Wayne, who has been working with wood for 48 years, aims to preserve the traditional methods associated with the 10 000-year-old culture of the Tlingit people, opting to use age-old tools instead of modern technology. He also spends time teaching young people the methods he’s mastered during the course of his career.

“When I was 12-years-old and I saw my Dad carving I knew that’s what I wanted to do,” says Wayne. “That was the beginning of a long career of being able to do art.”

Russian artist Salavat Fidai carves minuscule sculptures out of pencil lead.

The delicate and complicated process takes immense concentration and precision, as the lead is easily breakable under pressure.

Salavat uses an X-ACTO knife to create tiny replicas of buildings, people and cartoons.

Featured recently on Instagram, he has over 350 000 followers and his work is available for purchase through his website.

The video below shows the process of creating one of these intricate works of art:

Salavat is also known for his small paintings on matchboxes, as well as his “regular-size” work.

Raoul Goetze is a multimedia designer by training, a tattoo artist by day, guitar player for psychedelic rock’n’roll band Wild Eastern Arches after hours, and between all of that he produces visual art, prints, drawings and etchings. His stunning intricate mandalas, which he sketches and laser-engraves onto mahogany wood, have caught our eye.

“I specialised in graphic design, which taught me the discipline of design layout, conceptualisation, attention to detail, striving for perfection and making something visually attractive. However, I longed for hands-on design using only a pencil and piece of paper. This is why I chose wood – to get my hands dirty again,” Raoul explains. He is also inspired by the ritualistic spiritual background behind mandalas, and is fascinated by the balance and detail in their construction.

We’ve seen them, we’ve touched them, and we’re captivated by their eclectic influences and the way they draw from the different creative disciplines in which their creator immerses himself. According to Raoul, they are a point of departure for future projects that will concentrate on visual and functional designs. We’ll definitely be keeping a look out for more from this maestro.
