Decorex Cape Town – sponsored by Plascon – is unveiling a range of exciting new features alongside a number of popular instalments at this year’s 20th exhibition, taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 27 April to 1 May 2018.

Set to the Decorex #rhythmoflife theme, each installation has been carefully selected to reflect current trends and unexpected inspiration using South African talent and products.

Here are four things to look forward to:

1. 100% Clay

Forming part of the 100% Design South Africa exhibition, the 100% Clay feature will focus on this earthy element in a variety of interesting forms. The concept, which is curated by Cathy O’Clery, Creative Director of 100% Design South Africa, will showcase an incredible selection of bowls, jugs, cups and plates, all crafted by some of the area’s leading ceramicists. Each artist will feature four examples of each crockery item, providing the visitor with a unique insight into the creative range of aesthetics offered by this particular material.

2. Rooms to Grow

A once-overlooked in-home design space, the child’s room is now getting some deserving attention in the newly-introduced Rooms to Grow feature. Four regional designers, including Clever Little Monkey and Duett Kids’ Furniture, will craft four unique spaces, each one reflecting one of the growing periods in an individual’s life – the Nursery, Toddler Room, Tween Room and Teen Room.

3. @home Trend Home presented by Decorex

A perennially popular feature, the @home Trend Home presented by Decorex is a complete home installation that showcases the @home homeware store and @homelivingspace furniture and decor ranges, fused with the #rhythmoflife theme. Creative Director of Decorex, Anita Bloom, and her experienced team work closely with leading suppliers to portray the best 2018 trends. Anita has indicated a definite preference for the Scandinavian Hygge trend, which leans towards comfort, with the open-plan room divider trend allowing for a private, yet continuous spatial flow.

4. Lighting Elements – brought to you by Fundi Light & Living

The Lighting Elements feature features an expansive selection of lighting designs. A wide spectrum of lighting options from Fundi Light & Living provide a fantastic visualisation of the impact lighting has on the space and mood of a room.

Some other features to look forward to include:

  • Plascon colour stand
  • #withlovefromDecorex decor choices
  • ISCA Bathroom Trends Project

WORDS Lindi Brownell Meiring

Berlin-based, South African illustrator and painter Tara Deacon, who we previously featured here, is hosting an exhibition in Cape Town, entitled Close To Home.

Tara, whose creations usually explore the worlds of colour and nature, has decided to work in black-and-white with her latest body of work. The pieces, which focus on the idea of reclusion, belonging and what the concept of home means, are made up of a group of larger-scale paintings.

“A much anticipated European summer was not spent along a hot tropical beach or a far away land, but rather behind closed doors in my home and studio in Berlin,” explains Tara. “During this time my thoughts drifted between feelings of reclusion, finding a sense of self in the not-so-new place I call home, as well as small corners and still life’s of familiar scenes that gave me a sense of belonging.”

Close To Home runs from 8 February until 28 February 2018 at AHEM! Art Collective, 77 Lower Main Road, Observatory, Cape Town. The gallery is open Tuesdays to Fridays from 8am until 5pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 9am until 3pm.
