Local leading surfacing brand Caesarstone has announced the winners of the Caesarstone Student Design Competition 2022.

The brief, conceptualised by award-winning architect Mokena Makeka was “From Ashes, We Rise”, pushing the boundaries of the entrants to think outside the box and get creative with their designs. The concept revolved around the rethinking and rebuilding of the home of South African Democracy, the National Assembly. “The National Assembly is where democracy can thrive and there’s an avenue for change to happen,” says Megan Noel, Head of Marketing at Caesarstone.

Through the brief, entrants were asked to be bold in their designs and re-imagine a new National Assembly in its entirety. Entries needed to reflect the traditions and symbolism of South Africa’s heritage – while showing off their unique design aesthetics and talents.

An impressive judging panel included names like Stefan Antoni of SAOTA, Dorothy van’t Riet of Dorothy van’t Riet Design & Décor Consultants, Juliet Kavishe of IID, Jonathan Anstey of Anstey Architects, and Michele Rhoda of ARRCC.

First Place & Best Presentation Award:

The first-place prize for the 2022 SDC was awarded to Wian van der Merwe. His lecturers are Jaco Landman and Nica Maree at BHC School of Design. Stefan Antoni of SAOTA had this to say about the winning entry: “Overall the graphic is just so clear, and so engaging that you’re drawn to it. You can feel the spaces and magic inside – that’s why it was such a clear winner.”

Second Place:

Anine Naudé’s outstanding entry boasted a powerful narrative implemented throughout the presentation. “The space was used really well, and we all thought that this is something that’s extremely buildable,” says Michele Rhoda of ARRCC. Her lecturer is Gené Keet at CAD4ALL Institute of Applied Architecture who helped her develop the presentation into a worthy second-place spot.

Third Place:

Nielle Crafford’s magnificent entry was selected by the judges because it really summed up the ‘rise from ashes’ theme. “To take something quite disastrous that happened, but then to celebrate it in a beautiful way in the idea of the protea is wonderful,” says Jonathan Anstey of Anstey Architects. Her lecturers are the multi-talented Jaco Landman and Nica Maree from the BHC School of Design.

With Caesarstone’s latest campaign, there has never been a better reason to increase the value of your property and housing developments.

Showing the world just how much Caesarstone believes in its product and commitment to the best quality and service, it’s putting R1 million on its reputation!

When you register for your Caesarstone Residential Lifetime Warranty, you will automatically be entered into a draw to win R1 million in cash. Any installation installed after 1 April 2019 qualifies and the competition closes on 15 February 2020.

The kitchen and bathroom spaces are two of the most important areas in the home in terms of financial investment, so it’s imperative to ensure that quality materials and finishes are installed throughout.

When selecting surfaces, the two most important things to look for are durability and longevity. The only way to test the longevity of a surface is to select a quality brand that offers a legitimate warranty. With an influx of imitation quartz surfaces available today, being a discerning buyer is no easy task.

Built to last a lifetime, Caesarstone is the original engineered quartz surface that uses the very best technology and materials to make each Caesarstone slab. Every slab is carefully signed off and checked individually by a trained technician.

Once your Caesarstone installation has been completed, visit caesarstone.co.za to register for your Residential Lifetime Warranty to qualify for the competition. Terms and conditions apply.

As of May 2018, Caesarstone has launched four sophisticated new colourways, ideal for use in both kitchens and bathrooms.

The new colourways feature Airy Concrete 4044 and Cloudburst Concrete 4011, which form part of the new Metropolitan Collection, White Attica 5143 from the slimline Ultimo Collection and Excava 4046.

The 20 mm thick Airy Concrete 4044 and Cloudburst Concrete 4011 are reminiscent of raw surfaces and poured plaster and feature matte, unpolished finishes symbolic of urban environments and industrial loft style. Cloudburst Concrete 4011 features a subtle cloud-like finish and is inspired by the uneven, porous qualities of cement and the texture of alabaster.

Excava 4046 is designed to reflect authentic textures associated with manufacturing, and is designed to complement materials like wood and smoked glass. The simple, yet elegant 13 mm polished White Attica features a combination of white and dark grey, inspired by classic marble.

Leading surface manufacturer Caesarstone has collaborated with New York-based collaborative design studio Snarkitecture on “Altered States”, an installation that explores the idea of the kitchen island.

“Our starting point was the kitchen island, which has transformed from a functional cooking area into the hub of the modern home, a space for entertainment, social interaction and performance,” says Caesarstone CEO Raanan Zilberman. “We asked Snarkitecture to create an installation that will inspire architects and designers to think about the future of the kitchen and use our material in new ways.”

Using water and its different states in both nature and in the kitchen as inspiration, Snarkitecture created Altered States using Caesarstone’s White Attica, forming a kitchen island made up of layers akin to natural topography.

The installation will be showcased during Milan Design Week from 17 – 21 April 2018.

“Our aim for the Milan version of Altered States is to use ice, water and steam to create a mesmerising collective experience around a kitchen island that has been designed around these simple elements,” says the team at Snarkitecture, made up of partners and co-founders Alex Mustonen and Benjamin Porto. “We took Caesarstone surfaces and turned them into something voluminous and engaging, further highlighting the strength and flexibility of the material.”

WORDS Cheri Morris

Joburg-based industrial design house Dokter and Misses, in collaboration with Caesarstone, have created an aesthetically unique yet functional collection of home decor pieces.

The collection showcases the superiority of Caesarstone’s luxury engineered quartz surface and reflects on the past decade of Dokter and Misses‘ work, its present and the sculptural trajectory that the design house intends to explore in the future.

The collection is made up of three products: Dreamz, a new take on a low zigzag table from their Bloc Model series; Weirdo, a reimagining of a dining table from their current Foreva XXX collection and Domino, a brand new series of lights that juxtaposes heavy stone and fragile glass to create artistic statement light pieces.

“Conceptually, we decided to indulge in the material,” explains co-founder and head designer, Adriaan Hugo. “It’s engineered to be perfect for our aesthetic – straight lines and sculptural pieces. What better way to explore the material than to be given free reign to work with it?”

Father and daughter duo Chris and Anna Weylandt have collaborated with Caesarstone to design a stylish new furniture collection.

The textural Convivium range, which was recently launched at 100% Design South Africa, contrasts simple, slick contours with raw wood, steel and the classic, marble texture of Caesarstone. “We love juxtaposing textures,” says Chris and Anna. “The resulting tension forms the path to new ideas.”

The collection includes the Luna drinks cabinet and a trio of sure-footed side tables.

Caesarstone has released the first instalment of a year long collaboration with Spanish design guru Jaime Hayón (who we previously featured here).

The project, entitled Stone Age Folk, which was recently unveiled at the Interior Design Show in Toronto, features a range of Caesarstone’s signature quartz in the form of tabletops, wall hangings and cabinet fronts.

Each piece portrays a stylised face, with Jaime using inspiration from old folklore, ranging from Hungarian myths to African masks and fables. The faces are constructed from a selection of small pieces of engineered quartz, which are slotted together in a process called marquetry.

The series will be expanding for Milan Design Week in April 2017.
