A new residential range of Softology Carpets by Belgotex brings together on-trend colourways and the ultimate in comfort.

Getting home, kicking off your shoes and stepping barefoot onto plush carpeting is one of life’s little pleasures, and this is exactly what the Softology carpet range by Belgotex has been designed for.

The collection was developed using a trademark master fibre technology that ensures feather-like softness. Given that carpet trends in 2018 are expected to lean towards a healthy dose of colour, this collection includes refreshingly vibrant yet subtle hues named Swoon, Dahlia, Suave and Regis, among others.

“Colour is definitely a big trend in carpets, breaking the grey, beige and dark colour monotony so common in soft floor coverings,” says Helen de Villiers, Marketing Manager at Belgotex Floors. “This range has distinctive colours that lend a modern feel to a home.”

You can add some colour and comfort throughout your home: Softology carpets come in 8 mm, 11 mm and 13 mm pile. The higher pile works well in bedrooms, whereas the lower heights suit the lounge.

And if you’re concerned about keeping luxurious carpeting spotless, the Belgotex designers have thought of that too. Along with an increased number of finer filaments in the pile, the carpets have stain-proof qualities, making them pretty, plush and practical.

The new Belgotex design centre offers an experiential display of the company’s full range of carpets, vinyl and artificial grass.

The Belgotex Design Centre in Century City is a welcoming, easy-to-navigate space that allows customers to rethink the way they see and choose flooring, says Executive Director Edward Colle. Designed by branding agency the International Trend Institute (ITI), the 300 m2 space includes an elevated gallery and showroom area, coffee bar, boardroom and offices on a mezzanine level.

More than 80 flooring options are displayed, and experts are on hand. “We have always prided ourselves on leading by design and being the first to introduce the latest flooring technology to South Africa,” says Edward. “The Design Centre is an example of this innovative, design-first thinking.”

We asked Edward about the latest trends in flooring. “The two mega trends dominating the residential scene are plush luxury and natural tones and textures. Sisal, coir and jute – or their synthetic counterparts – are gaining popularity. And soft surfaces in delicate fibres are almost the countertrend. The chunky cords, Berbers and cut-piles of the new Belgotex Lifestyle Collection speak directly to these trends.”

You’ll find the Belgotex Design Centre in the Matrix Building, 1 Bridgeway, Century City, Cape Town.

WORDS Debbie Loots

Emma de Crespigny’s vintage shop in Woodstock, C20 Galerie, stocks all kinds of retro pieces dating back to the 20th century. Not only does she source these beauties from all over the world, she lovingly restores them, reproduces her own line of furniture and lighting, and custom-makes specific pieces for her clients.

All this retro design prowess is a result of Emma having done her design time: she spent 10 years working alongside New York dealer Alan Moss while obtaining a Masters in History of Decorative Art and Design from Parsons, as well as from the prestigious Cooper Hewitt Design Museum in New York. Fresh from Decorex in Cape Town, where she designed a fabulous Hollywood-inspired bedroom at the Belgotex Trend House, Emma tells us a little about herself.

Where were you born?

I was born in the United States. However, I have lived in South Africa for more than a decade and also spent a lot of time in England, so I wouldn’t really call myself an American.

When did you first realise your love for vintage and why specifically 20th-century furnishings?

When I was 30, I co-owned a small auction house with some friends and we held an auction of 20th-century design. It was at that moment that I fell in love with design from 1920s through to 1970s. For me, the reason why I love design post 1910 is that it became less about ornamenting furniture and more about simple lines, where the material visible to the eye, becomes what is beautiful. For example furniture made out of Lucite and lighting made out of metal and glass. The modernists of the late 1910s and 1920s discovered new materials in architecture first and brought it to interior design.

Tell us a bit about working with Alan Moss.

Alan Moss is the person that changed my direction in life.  Although I moved to New York with the intention of finding a reputable dealer in 20th-century design, Alan Moss exposed me to so much more than I anticipated. I learned about the rarer pieces like mid-century French and German furniture as well as 1950s European ceramics and glass. Coupled with doing my Masters in History of 20th-century Design, 10 years working with him armed me with the ability to open a store by myself, on a much smaller scale, of course.

Where do you source your pieces from?

They are from France, Germany, Austria, Italy and the United States, mostly. I have also found pieces here in South Africa since I have lived in Cape Town. I also represent South African artist, Galia Gluckman and plan to add others artists I appreciate.

April 2014: Browse the photo gallery for our highlights from the event.

March 2014: Creating interiors unique to individuals is the key trend at Decorex this weekend, taking place at the Durban Exhibition Centre from Thursday 20 to Sunday 23 March.

This is the year that design and decor will move away from sweeping dictating trends and focus on the needs and styles of the individual, according to Decorex general manager Sian Steyn. This is what the “Design Your Life” theme of Africa’s biggest decor and lifestyle expo is about.

From “Manscapes” – outdoor man caves – by local celebs and Dion Chang’s design and trend forecast, to Plascon’s annual colour forecast (read more here) and the Belgotex Trend House featuring the latest in flooring trends, the expo will be focused on helping consumers to voice their individuality and create their own spaces. Other highlights include St Leger & Viney, which will be showcasing the bold colours of Africa in an installation with KwaZulu-Natal designer Helen Byloo of Suda West; and an entrance installation by Durban design duo Chantelle Moss and Sarah Reynolds from Urban Lace, also emphasising highly individual design.

The Design Your Life Theatre will feature interactive cooking and entertaining demonstrations, while the Gourmet Market will surely get those digestive juices flowing with delectable frozen yoghurt and confectionary from Bella and Boo, award-winning coffee from South African barista champion Craig Charity, elegant outdoor food from Eat Greek Catering, cocktails and wines from the The Wine Bar, and even the ever-popular Afro’s Chicken food truck (read more here) to meet even the most fussiest of eaters.

So get down there this weekend for plenty of design and decor ideas and inspiration, lots to buy and loads of practical know-how.
