Geberit’s “Design Meets Function“ philosophy is once again at the forefront of their award-winning AquaClean shower toilets.

Geberit has been carrying out intensive research and development at its Rapperswil-Jona site, in Switzerland, for decades. As a result, the brand is renown for its outstanding design along with pioneering a host of revolutionary, patented comfort technologies. One of their latest innovations, the AquaClean shower toilet, elevates the bathroom experience by taking hygiene to the next level.

The AquaClean range includes Geberit’s patented WhirlSpray shower technology for cleaning intimate areas, and an intuitive remote control. Additional comfort functions are included depending on the model such as a lady shower, an odour extraction unit, self-cleaning function, a warm air dryer or seat heating. Every model has a spray arm that can be set to five different positions, with a spray intensity that can be set to five different levels, and water heating via a continuous flow heater. The AquaClean range is also fully compatible with the Geberit Home App.

Geberit AquaClean: Elevating Bathroom Hygiene with Innovative Shower Toilet Technology

There are three Geberit AquaClean shower toilet models to choose from:

Geberit AquaClean Mera

This model offers the most complete comfort and convenience options by marrying savvy design with state-of-the-art technology. It includes features like:

  • A proximity sensor that triggers the automatic opening of the lid. Closing requires no effort either – unless you want to start the procedure with a light touch. This function ensures that the WC is always closed after use.
  • The Turboflush has an asymmetrical inner geometry of the ceramic appliance, this means that it can be flushed out thoroughly and quietly. A single lateral flush opening is sufficient for the flush water inlet. Inaccessible areas have been greatly reduced; there are no edges or corners whatsoever which helps with cleaning.
  • With the DuoFresh unpleasant odours are detected immediately in the ceramic appliance and are neutralised by an integrated long-lasting ceramic honeycomb filter. The two-minute run-on of the odour extraction unit renders subsequent ventilation unnecessary.
  • A discreet orientation light at the base creates ambience and helps you orientate yourself at night. The atmospheric light beam is activated by the proximity sensor and lights up in one of seven colours, which can be set individually.

Geberit AquaClean Sela

The AquaClean Sela features a timeless, purist design and is characterised by a clear expression of form, high-quality materials and functions that are extremely simple and intuitive to use. Like the Mera, the Sela also has a lady shower nozzle and orientation light.

Geberit AquaClean Tuma

If you’re looking for compact all-rounder which offers versatile possibilities for every bathroom then the AquaClean Tuma is the ideal model. This is also available as a WC enhancement solution for retrofitting, as an alternative to a WC complete solution.

VISI’s latest special issue offers inspiration and design inspiration for your new bathroom.

Long gone are the days when a bathroom got the least design-focused attention in your home. It was a space that primarily needed to be clean and functional, with the only design direction being a nod to the aesthetics of the age.

The age we’re living in now, though, is a very different one. For starters, our hyper-connected world means that our bathrooms have moved beyond pure function to a space that’s a relaxing refuge from a fast-paced life. And secondly, I’d argue that there has never been a time when we’ve collectively been this interested – and this informed – on design aesthetics. To add to that, there are so many beautiful choices to be made.

To help you with those choices, we’ve taken a slightly different tack with this latest edition of
our popular VISI Bathrooms special edition. Robyn Alexander, our fabulously talented editor for this issue, has selected five on-trend looks – Colour Concepts, Sleek Minimalist, Classic Revival, Organic Oasis and Modern Haven – that will inspire your new bathroom. Plus she’s roped in a host of design experts for their insights, and shown you exactly how to shop each trend with our top picks of finishes, furniture, hardware and accessories.

On display during Milan Design Week, “Metamorphic” by Cosentino and Tom Dixon challenged conventional interpretations of bathroom design by reimagining a traditionally functional space by transforming it into a sculptural place of refuge and contemplation.

Spanish surface design specialists Cosentino and world-renowned British designer Tom Dixon came together for Milan Design Week 2023 to create “Metamorphic”, an architectural installation that challenged the perception of the bathroom as a purely functional, hidden space.

Brought to life with Dekton®, an ultracompact stone, “Metamorphic” showcased the versatility, sustainability, and durability of this innovative material. Inspired by Tom Dixon’s fascination with new methods of modular construction and deep understanding of the properties of Dekton®, the sculptural installation featured four modules of varying sizes that showcased a new vision for the bathroom as a focal point of interior architecture. “Metamorphic” aimed to take visitors on a journey through a modular world with surreal shapes and the dramatic effect of water, sound, and light.

"Metamorphic": Cosentino and Tom Dixon Team Up for Milan Design Week 2023

“I’ve long been fascinated by prefabricated bathrooms inserted into buildings as modules, which was the departure point and initial inspiration behind ” Metamorphic”’. After visiting the Dekton® production facility in Spain, I was enthralled by the innovation and sustainability of the material. The durability and beauty of Dekton® allowed me to create a unified and seamless 3D installation – almost as if it was carved out of stone. The result showcases the bathroom as a practical place of refuge and awakens the opportunity for these spaces to be more expressive and heroic,” said Tom Dixon.

The sole collection used to create the installation was the new Dekton® Pietra Kode, which reinterprets the timeless beauty of three classic Italian stones: Vicenza, Travertine and Ceppo di Gré. The five colourways featured – Grafite, Sabbia, Ceppo, Nebbia and Marmorio – conveyed the look and natural texture of classic Italian stone.

Turning on History: The Fascinating Evolution of Taps https://visi.co.za/turning-on-history-the-fascinating-evolution-of-taps/ Tue, 18 Apr 2023 05:00:00 +0000 https://visi.co.za/?p=622660 From basic water spouts to elegant modern designs, taps have been integral to our daily lives since 1700 BC.

INFORMATION AND PHOTOS Courtesy of Italtile

From basic water spouts to elegant modern designs, taps have been integral to our daily lives since 1700 BC.

The modern basin and sink mixers owe their existence to a young American engineering student named Alfred Moen, who in 1937, after scalding his fingers with hot water from an old-fashioned spigot, invented what he called a “single-handle mixing faucet”.

Moen continued to refine his invention after WWII, and by 1959, Fortune Magazine recognised his “single-handle faucet” as one of the top 100 best-designed mass-produced products, alongside the Model T Ford and Benjamin Franklin’s safer fire stove.

To truly understand the evolution of water flow systems, the team at Italtile gave us a quick history lesson, which begins in 1700 BC.

1700 BC

History of taps – Knossos

In the 1900s, during excavations to uncover the 1700 BC Minoan Palace of Knossos in Crete, archaeologists unearthed a system of terracotta pipes, with taps made from precious metals like gold and silver.

776 BC

History of taps – Athens

Water in Athens was transported from the mountains through channels to street fountains, some of which are still functional at present. The fountains were equipped with spouts and spigots, but the majority of the population relied on water urns instead of indoor plumbing.

470 BC

History of taps – Rome

Enter the Romans. This was the heyday of Roman engineering, and significant advancements were made in the construction of roads and aqueducts, greatly improving access to water. Although lead pipes were used (the Romans were unfortunately unaware of the harmful effects lead has on the body), brass water valves similar to those used in modern times were also prevalent. Elite villas and more luxurious homes had separate valves for hot water, cold water, and a ready mix of warm water. In contrast, the general population had to rely on public baths, public latrines, and fountains for their water needs.

At the same time the Chinese were using dragon-shaped valves carved out of brass at the end of pipes made from bamboo to deliver water.

43 – 410 AD

During this period the Roman Empire extended into England and Western Europe. Wealthy landowners, the church and the nobility were introduced to water delivery systems and water control valves.

5th – 14th Century

Following the decline of the Roman Empire, the intricate infrastructure of Europe deteriorated, and the Dark Ages resulted in a return to more primitive methods of accessing water (hello, muddy wells). 900 Years of tap-less living followed.

14th Century

History of taps - Westminster

As the Middle Ages began to take shape, the presence of taps was still rare in the UK… unless you were royalty. It is not surprising that King Edward III’s bathtub in Westminster Palace had a tap installed. The majority of the population, on the other hand, had to rely on wells and rivers for their water supply.

18th Century

Plumbing and taps became more accessible, but indoor taps and plumbing were only for the moneyed minority.

19th Century

With the Industrial Revolution’s mechanisation rumbling into being from around 1740, mass production of previously elite items, including taps, became possible. Around this time, Thomas Grill invented the tap spout aerator nozzle with threading which adjusted the water flow.

1970s

The ’70s saw the arrival of the ceramic disc single lever mixer.

1981

An Australian named Norman Wareham filed a patent for his hands-free invention which he called the sensor-activated tap.

Today

History of taps – Italtile lavabo 2 fori parete
Program One tap range imported from Italy, exclusive to Italtile.

With advancements in robotics, AI, smart homes, nano and biotechnology, and 3D printing, we have entered the early stages of the fourth industrial revolution. How will taps evolve from here?

Elevated Fixtures: How to Add a Splash of Colour to your Bathroom https://visi.co.za/how-to-add-colour-to-your-bathroom-with-fixtures/ Wed, 14 Dec 2022 05:00:00 +0000 https://visi.co.za/?p=618265 Colour is an important aspect in bathroom design and is integral when it comes to creating a calming space.

The post Elevated Fixtures: How to Add a Splash of Colour to your Bathroom appeared first on Visi.

Colour is an important aspect in bathroom design and is integral when it comes to creating a calming space.

Bathrooms from an important part of any home – a space where aesthetic appeal and technical prowess meet. It is often a place used to relax and unwind after a busy day, which is why the use of colour is so important here. As an international visual language, colour enables architects and designers to communicate a concept or set a mood through interior design, so it comes as no surprise that calming neutral colours such as beige, light grey or ivory, are often favoured when creating a timeless yet modern bathroom sanctuary.

Colours that spark joy

  • Sand and nude tones: They create a feeling of warmth and balance a space – perfect for those wishing to inject a sense of calm and harmony to their bathroom.
  • Grey tones: From cool to warm, grey comes in a wide range of shades. Accessories in red, yellow or turquoise harmonise especially well with this hue.
  • Pastel colours: Light blue, pink, mint and similar shades lend a sense of lightness and well-being to a room. They look particularly beautiful when paired white appliances.

Consistency within a colour scheme delivers not only a refined design aesthetic, but also creates harmony and cohesion.

International bathroom experts Geberit recommend using classic shapes and colours when it comes to sanitary installation elements and ceramics, and soft, warm colours when designing the walls. Classic white washbasins and WCs with look particularly sophisticated when combined with neutral colours.

A few things to keep in mind:

Here’s what you should consider when adding a splash of colour, according to Geberit‘s experts:

Materials

Colour shade variance comes from the different materials used in production. This poses challenges when matching metal and/or plastic accessories with ceramic fixtures.

Finishes

The choice of bathroom finishes can also impact colour consistency across the bathroom. Tapware, shower handles, and other bathroom hardware are available in a variety of finishes, including chrome, brushed nickel, oil rubbed bronze and stainless steel. While it is relatively easy to find matching accessories for popular finishes such as chrome, this is not the case for every finish type.

Designers may also want the freedom to support multiple finishes in one space. When selecting finishes, consider the amount of cleaning and maintenance required. For example, chrome is prone to fingerprint marks and water spots whereas brushed nickel is relatively easy to maintain and clean. On the other hand, a copper finish may require more care throughout its life, but develops an attractive natural patina. Improper care or an inferior quality finish can result in fading and cracking, which can compromise the overall look and feel of the bathroom.

Lighting

Geberit
The Geberit Option Mirror range features illuminated mirrors and mirror cabinets which can create a perfect sanctuary and ambiance for any bathroom.

The way the human eye perceives the colour of objects can depend on lighting. Accordingly, the colours of objects will not look the same throughout the day. In spaces exposed to plentiful sunlight, as the amount and angle of the sun changes, so will the colours in the bathroom. Where there is artificial light, the type of light bulb can alter the colours in a room.

True design freedom

Matching accessories with tapware finishes can be difficult as not every individual item in the bathroom is perfectly identical, particularly in terms of colour. While colour matching taps and accessories has been the traditional focal point of bathroom design, Geberit offers a new approach.

Geberit
Geberit’ s new Sigma50 and Sigma60 flush plates can complement the design aesthetics of any bathroom.

By matching the flush button with the toilet, an overall impression of cohesiveness can be achieved. The architect and designer have complete freedom to explore their colour options in tapware and other accessories without the challenge of matching multiple elements in the bathroom. Geberit aims to achieve coherence through material likeness, matching the white colour surfaces gives an overall impression of harmony and cohesion within the space.

Geberit
Geberit Monolith Plus

Design trends calling for monochromatic colour schemes and bold colour statements. Geberit’ s Monolith Sanitary Modules are now available in the following new finishes: Lava Glass, Concrete and Stoneware Glass. The integrated odour extraction unit, intelligent sensor technology and the especially convenient flush actuation are only three of its many virtues.

It is common for people to consider a neutral as a backdrop or primary base when purchasing tiles. We look at a few popular neutrals and offer some tips and guidelines

Colours are divided into warm (red, orange), neutral (yellow, blue) and cool (blue, velvet). Pure neutrals such as white aren’t considered warm or cool. Adding a slightly yellow or grey tint to your room can make it warmer or cooler.

Since South Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere, we love warm colours. That could be why beiges, ivory, and even taupe reign over light greys (thanks to the sun and south-facing rooms).

Beige

Decobella
Karma permagon
7.5X30cm tiles

The second most popular neutral (white being the first) is beige.

Call it what you will. Beige isn’t the ”hip” word, but still, beige is where it all started. Beige is anything from white to greyish yellowish.

It’s available in various light tints that give it a neutral and warm appearance.

Ivory or Sand

Decobella
Argile Siena
6×24.6cm

It is seen as a deep tone of beige or, as the name describes, adding a dash of reddish yellow to beige, resulting in various tones.

And then there’s the mushroom or Taupe

Decobella
Soul grey
7.5X30cm tiles

According to the Dictionary of Color, the first use of “taupe” as a colour name in English was in the early 19th century. Still, the earliest entry by the Oxford English Dictionary was in 1911. In 1846, “All shades of grey are fashionable and negligee, particularly pearl grey, iron grey, and Taupe.

Think brown grey or greyish brown, whichever one resonates. There are different tones of Taupe in all sizes when looking at tiles for your kitchen or bathroom wall or floor.

Other options in trendy neutrals:

Decobella
H15 Brianna in Pumice
15X15cm
Decobella
Heritage Hexagon in Wheat
15X15cm – 17.5X20cm
Decobella
Riviera Cuadrado in Vert
