Following a successful launch at Design Indaba 2014, the homeware, stationery and apparel brand aLoveSupreme is still going strong. Its latest range, Lionise, is inspired by African animals and patterns.

Leanne and Ryan Botha ran a design consultancy for 15 years before deciding to take the leap and launch their own brand. “Skirting the edge of a mid-life crisis and frustrated by the restrictions of client briefs, Ryan wanted creative carte blanche to design a range he was truly proud of. It was cheaper than buying a Porsche, so I was happy to join him for the ride!” says Leanne, who runs the business and manages their 10 staff members, leaving Ryan to get on with his whimsical designs.

“Whimsical” is an apt word to describe the motifs in all aLoveSupreme collections, including Lionise. Vibrant colours and African inspired prints adorn lifestyle and homeware products, including scatter-cushion covers, place mats, coasters, trays, pencil cases and – our favourite – notebooks.

“I illustrate – by hand – an array of elements within a broad theme, and then select what I feel will work the best. I play around with the various parts until a design falls together,” Ryan says of his creative process. “A range usually includes about four designs and two colour ways, and is often a series of happy accidents.” There is a lot more to look forward to from aLoveSupreme, most notably a range of T-shirts and trucker caps, which, say Ryan and Leanne, will make affordable gifts for those who appreciate local design.

There is also a heritage collection in the making, which will include new bags and picnic blankets.

Husband and wife duo Ryan and Leanne Botha, the creators of aLoveSupreme, have added a fanciful new range to their quirky brand.

Jungle Fever was created by Ryan to reflect “the natural beauty and vibrant colour of our surroundings”.

Products in the range include a variety of homeware and stationery items that include cushion covers (R390), pouches (R240), coin purses (R100), notebooks (from R130) and postcards (R25), notecards (R35), gift tags (R50), wrapping paper (R25), melamine trays (from R140) and placemats (R100). There are also disposable placemats (R195), pencil cases (R140) and clipboards (R120).

The new range, which is available in a tropical colour palette of yellow, green, pink and turquoise, complements aLoveSupreme’s existing collections of whimsical stationery, gift-wrap, greeting cards and homeware.

Design motifs include palm trees and pineapples, tropical birds and crocodiles: a veritable adventure through an exotic land populated by fantastical, brightly coloured flora and fauna.

Works by Walter Battiss, in the form of prints, ceramics, customised stationary, wallpaper and a new limited edition handmade jewellery range, are now available at the collaborative 117 On Long retail space and gallery in Cape Town.

The limited edition collection aims to make his work available to a wider audience.

“The graphic content of Battiss’ art easily lends itself to being reproduced and applied to fabric, ceramics and printed matter, and we feel driven to use it to make good art more accessible,” says Walter Battiss Company founder Eduard Du Plessis. “Our new space is all about encouraging consumers to interact with and experience Battiss’ art in an engaging, warm space – as opposed to ogling objets in a stiff, formal environment.”

You’ll find the range in the upstairs section of 117 On Long, a store which is also home to local brands like Ceramic Factory, aLoveSupreme and Artvraat.

A percentage of the profits from pieces sold at 117 On Long will be invested into The Walter Battiss Art Museum in Somerset East.

Ceramic Factory has opened 117 On Long, a new collaborative store on Cape Town’s bustling Long Street.

The store currently stocks local design brands aLoveSupreme, Artvraat and of course, Ceramic Factory. There are plans to expand and add more South African talent as the store develops. The concept behind the shop is to create a space where like-minded design brands can exhibit and sell their homegrown creations.

“We’re passionate about collaborating with local design brands that share Ceramic Factory’s ‘fun yet functional’ ethos,” explains Ceramic Factory Chief Executive Daniel Swanepoel. “We’re also excited to facilitate retail opportunities for brands that may not ordinarily be able to participate in a stand-alone retail environment, particularly in such an iconic location.”
